Hi Terry,
Found death certificate of ROBERT EMONDS of EARLSTON, whom I think is brother of WILLIAM EMONDS, X3 grandfather.
Death certificates of both have father as THOMAS EMONDS and occupation as general labourer. Mother on both with m.s. (does this stand for maiden surname?) as FRASER.
THOMAS EMONDS married AGNES FRAZER, 1811 @ MELROSE, guess s or z could be used! Mother is AGNES on WILLIAM,s death certificate but JANET on ROBERT's death certificate ? 
Too much of a coincidence but have never heard of Agnes as another name for Janet, unless she had a middle name?
