Buried where please?
« on: Sunday 02 March 08 19:48 GMT (UK) »

Hiya

We have Edmund Bevan who died in 1864 at the Wells, Lunatic Asylum, we can find no record of where he might be buried, would it be in a special cemetery for the asylum or would he have been given to the wife in North Petherton to dispose of.

Any ideas please

There's a Jane in 1947 and a Harry 1905 but none for the years you mention
- I take it you still mean in Somerset?

Thanks Barbara

yes I did mean Somerset, somewhere in the Mark area as that seems to be where most of the family lived and died,
Thank you for your time

There was a cemetery at Somerset Asylum (later Mendip Hospital), and Somerset R.O.
(see http://www.somerset.gov.uk/archives/ ) has details of deceased patients for the year your man died:

MENDIP HOSPITAL, WELLS

REF: D\H\men/24/16   Deceased Patients' Register   1864

They also have Admission Registers:

REF:   D\H\men/16

The staff at the R.O. are v. helpful, will prob. do the lookups for you and I don't think it's desperately expensive...

Hiya Brambletye

Thanks for the info, I shall have to go down there myself, I rang them yesterday and they were most unhelpful, perhaps if I go in person they may show a little more respect.
I have copied the ref No's. so I will take them with me and ask to see the records they told me they do not hold.

Thanks very much

Sorry to hear they gave you short shrift...I wonder what's happened? they are normally very good at S.R.O. We need to go there at some point and consult the same records, see if we can find an ancestor who suddenly went missing - if you do go, PM me and let me know how you got on, and if we find we have set a date to go ourselves and I've not heard from you by then, we'll have a look in the registers for your man. Have you any idea when he might have been admitted?
