« on: Sunday 02 March 08 13:54 GMT (UK) »

Hi, I was hoping someone could help me with the birth date of a Sampson Roberts born  Perranzabuloe early 1850's, his father was a James Henry Roberts, at this time unsure of his Mothers name. Any help much appreciated.

Suzard - I think it'll be the Q1 1850 because he's on the 1851 census with his parents

Thank You Suz, That was the problem I had found, I have recently been told that my Sampson Roberts on IGI had the wrong Mother, and that in fact his Mother was a Mary Jane Paull, and with a William Paull in the 1851 census this well maybe the case. I will send for the 1850 cert for Sampson and see what it comes back with.

                             Many thanks for your help

I've just checked the complete index for Jun qtr and Sept qtr 1852 and there are no birth reg in UK for Sampson Roberts

likewise for deaths Jun /Sept qtr 1921 (although he could have died elsewhwere)

So the member submitted reord looks dubious -although the 1852 date could possibly be his baptism date -but you would need to check parish records for that!

Hi everyone ...

Just a thought ....

I have seen a marriage;
Mary Ann Paull Dec q 1846 truro
on the same page all the other people are marrying in Stoke Damerell, she is the only one ~Truro ... then cross referencing same q, vol and page numbers there are these men:
Charles Beard, James Beard x 2 and Thomas Beard

In March q 1847
There is this marriage with these 2 on the same page;
Mary Ann Beard and James  Roberts.

Doesn't give her much time to bury one and mary another, although there is a Charles Beard death Mar q 1847

deb  Grin

can't wait to find out the info on the birth cert.

Hi , Further to my queries yesterday, I have now heard back from the lady who is also doing Roberts research, she believes that my James Roberts married Mary Jane Paull on 20th Feb 1848 in East Newlyn. It was in fact the James Roberts b 1822 St Allen who married Mary Ann Beard on the 27 th Feb 1847 Perranzabuloe, she has a list of children for them, and the birth certs she has, states Mary Ann Beard as their mother. I have sent for Sampson Roberts Birth Cert today and hopefully that will  help to confirm who his mother was ?

Hi Hotdog,

Banns were read between James ROBERTS a bachelor OTP and Mary Jane PAUL a sojourner itp spinster 9, 16 and 23 Jan 1848 Newlyn East

James ROBERTS = Mary Jane PAUL Mar 1/4 1848 St Col 9 73

Baptism 9 Dec 1850 St Agnes Wesleyan Samson ROBERTS son of James and Mary ROBERTS of Perranzabuloe was baptised aged 10 months

18 Mar 1852 Phillippa Ann dau of James and Mary ROBERTS of Perranzabuloe was baptised aged 5 months and 3 days

11 Jun 1857 Ellen Dau of James and Mary ROBERTS of Perranzabuloe was baptised (Born 27 Sep 1856)

Clearly the submitted IGI entry is inaccurate  Roll Eyes

ROBERTS Sampson died Sep 1/4 1920 Truro aged 69 years 5c 127 (Strikes me the age of Sampson is absolutely perfect for the Sampson I have located)

Hi again Hotdog,

I was just checking something in Newlyn PR's and I note there was a second baptism - the whole family over a short period of time.  Wink

The minister seemed to do many, many bulk baptisms over a short period of time here during this year. Perhaps he found a lot of people either not baptised at all or baptised nonconformists and did the lot, perhaps starting with the baby Susan and then a little later got the rest of the children. (Clearly the names all match Sampson's siblings provided in the 1861 census.)

19 Sep 1858 Susan Ann ROBERTS (something else written above I cant read) dau of James and Mary (Father Miner of Rejarrow Parish of - looks like Par...)
1 Nov 1858 Sampson ROBERTS son of James and Mary (Father Miner of Rejarrow)
1 Nov 1858 Philippa Ann ROBERTS Dau of James and Mary (Father Miner of Rejarrow)
5 Nov 1858 Elizabeth Jane ROBERTS born 1 May 1847 of James and Mary (Father Miner of Rejarrow)
5 Nov 1858 Mary ROBERTS born 8 Mar 1854 of James and Mary (Father Miner of Rejarrow)
5 Nov 1858 Ellen ROBERTS born 15 Sep 1857 of James and Mary (Father Miner of Rejarrow)

(DOB's provided seem a bit out but it was a few years down the track)

Now I see this James and Mary Ann Beard mentioned on the IGI were in St Allen and St Agnes but had different children's names. I wonder if perhaps they may have had the son Sampson in 1853. He does not appear in a Census, nor do I see a baptism for him but I do note a Sampson did die in 1858, no age given - perhaps it was their son. Interestingly both families appear to have a brother in Law in tow in 1851. The household of James and Maryann has brother of wife William (Looks like Been, misenterred perhaps) 28 b St Ewe. Mary Ann Robarts was also b St Ewe.

James Roberts = Mary Ann Beard Mar 1/4 1847 Truro 9 343. In 1861 their household consists of Frederick 13, William J 11, Jemyma 9, Emily 6, Mary J 5 (All b St Allen) and James H 1 b St Agnes. The family of James and Mary in Perranzabuloe we have Elizabeth Jane 12, Sampson 10, Philippa Ann 8, Mary 6, Ellen 4, Susan 2 and James 1 All born Perranzabuloe.

The only other Sampson to appear in the census was born Wendron 1849 and states this in the Census. He was the son of James Roberts and perhaps Ann Richards. The son of James and Mary from Perranzabuloe appears to have remained their where he married twice and I believe the 1920 death will prove to be him.

Seems a mistake has been made here. Perhaps James and Mary Ann Beard did have a son Sampson in 1853 but he died in 1858 and somehow it has got confused and the son of James and Mary Jane Paul has been incorrectly enterred as the son of James and Mary Ann Beard. There is certainly no Sampson b 1853 appearing in the census.

Judging by the entries I have found I do believe your Sampson was the son of James and Mary Jane Paul and will be very interested to hear the result when the certificate arrives. These other Children's certs could also be purchased to confirm they are the same family and their mother is in fact Mary Jane Paul and somebody got it wrong.

Good Luck...............Kris  Cheesy

Hi Kris, Many thanks for all that information, I will most certainly let you know what the birth cert has to say. It does appear whoever entered the info on IGI was incorrect, it makes you wonder how many more errors there may be.?
