In the 1901 Census a Herbert H Cartwright is living with his Wife Jane and Family at Stoke-On-Trent.It appears that this Herbert H Cartwright married a Jane Miller,according to Staffordshire BMD in a "Civil Marriage" at Stoke in 1890.It also appears from the 1901 Census that both Herbert H and Jane had been married previously,for listed in the Family are Cartwright children born before 1890,and also three Miller children named as Step-children.Thesse Miller children listed are;
James born c 1885 Stoke.
Charles born c 1886 Stoke.
Jennie born c 1888 Stoke.
RG13/2608/79/1.
Despite my best efforts I am unable to find these children in the 1891 Census.Of course the object of the exercise is to find Jane's maiden name.

WRJ - if you get the marriage certificate it "should" identify if Jane has been married before - and give both married & maiden names. Those I have found on the local BMD sites where the wife has been married before, normally indicate this with a "*" against her name - clicking on this give both names. As this isn't the case for the Cartwright/Miller marriage it may be that she wasn't previously married & that the children are illegitimate.
I haven't access to the census, so can't help there, sorry.

I think this is the family in 1891 - the writing is not good but an interesting transcript - search for
Florence Cartariflet  born 1890 +/-  1
The Miller children are  there as son/daughter with various names. I think Claas Authskis Willer must be Charles!

Thanks mshrmh,in this instace there was no "double entry" of the Marriage on Staffordshire BMD.However after looking further on Staffordshire BMD,it could well be that the Parents of the Miller children showing on the Census of 1901 were,James A Miller and Jane Smith,whose Marriage at Stoke in 1884 is also given as a "Civil Marriage".It throws up a nice easy Surname to work with the Jane!Many thanks to those who posted about the "Cartilghate" entry from 1891 which I did find eventually.Also msrmh,I did see the earlier Herbert Handel Marriage,but my interest in the Family is in the Herbert Cartwright born in c 1894.
