Hi

I'm trying to find confirmation of the birth of Robert William Ambrose. He was born in  around 1882 in Stow Bardolph but I can't find a birth or baptism record for him.

I know that, according to the 1891 Census he was the son of Lawrence and Elizabeth Ambrose and they were living at 251 Barroway Drove, Wimbotsham. I know that this is all correct as verbal family history confirms this place. Lawrence was a patient in North Cambs Hospitall, Wisbech at the time of the 1891 Census.

I've traced the family back through the Census' but would love to find a birth or baptism for Robert.

Robert moved to Fleet, Lincs by 1901 and there he married my gr grandmother.

I hope you can help.

In 1891 his age is 9 yob c1882, but in 1901, (in Fleet, Lincs) his age is 22, making a yob 1879, so what about this one?

That's not him.

His age is wrong on the 1901 Census. It was all a bit cloak and dagger when he left Norfolk so we wondered if he exaggerated his age to get a job. Apparently he walked out of Norfolk with nothing but his coat and the bag on his back. 

His headstone reads as follows :

Robert William Ambrose
Died 19 Jan 1959 aged 77

Giving hm a birth year of 1882.

My mum also remembers his death as she said she was 15 at the time and my uncle has confirmed his age so I know these dates are correct.

I think the Robert born 1878 died in 1879. This may be your man

Registered as Robert William Armbrose Downham Sep 1881

Yes, that Robert seems to have died the following year, possibly he could still have had the same parents, they often gave later children the same names as earlier children who had died.

Check out a registration for a Robert William Armbrose in 1881. What do you think?

I think that you could be right. If he was born Sept 1881 then he would have been 77 when he died in Jan '59 and be 9 on the 1891 Census.

The area of Downham matches as well. The spellng error would be why I couldn't find the record.
