Hi I have a 1st cousin 3x removed who moved to America as a member of a church who wash the feet of others? Does this mean anything to anyone, if I can trace the church she joined maybe I can find more information on her.
Amy Theresa Smith Stirrat born 21 Jun 1893 Glasgow, never married. Amy emigrated to Chigago, Ill, America in 1923 via Ellis Island arriving 18/2/1923 on the Ship Berengaria. States on ships manifest going to Brother, William Alston, 5614 Normal Blvd., Chicago, Ill.
This is not her brother but maybe a church brother?
After moving she visitied Glasgow a couple of times but died in the US, however I cannot find any further information on her. Can anyone help, thanks Evelina

Washing of feet is a common practice in many churches on Maunday Thursday at services which celebrate the last supper when Jesus washed the disciples feet.
You are likely to find it in Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches. It is part of the standard practices of Pentacostal and Piestistic Churches and is also done in some Baptist and Anabaptist churches.

Thanks to you all.
Genealiza that looks like it must be her. I have a picture of her in 1964 and it says at Colonial Manor, USA, unfortunately that's not much to go on.
Grub, that looks like her too, i guess they had the same problem with diction as we had here in Britian but I still cannot understand this brother, sister thing. Her parents married in 1880 Glasgow and had William abt. 1884 but no sign after that. Could he have changed his name? Why?
Cannot find a bc for William either under Alston or Stirratt with parents John Stirrat and Isabella Matilda Green Smith. Needs more research I think, Cheers Evelina

Well, www.ellisisland.org shows that William Alston came through EI in 1921, having apparently been in the US 1906-1920.
He gives his father as John Alston, 108 Catheart Road, Glasgow. (Cathcart road?). Wife is given as Margaret (?) in Illinois.
Mary Alston traveled in 1912 with son Jack, aged 2, gave mother's name as Jean McBride in Glasgow, she came first to the US in 1906, husband William in Chicago.
There's a William Alston b. 14 Nov 1884, d. Mar 1968, last residence Detroit on the SSDI. Maybe William was a foster child to the Stirratts?
http://www.findmypast.com/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action - shows a William Alston travelling to Canada in 1906, aged 22. With a little cheating I worked out he was on the Sicilian, but I can't seem to see him on the images on the Canadian archives site. Easily to miss, though (There's one sailing in 1906, and one which left Dec 1906 and arrives in 1907... unless they've mis-indexed one that left from Glasgow and are listing it as sailed from Liverpool).

Cheers Jorose, This is definately a mystery, none of the name or the addresses match with my family. I found William Alston's WW1 Draft Card and also him on the 1910 census but no sign in 1920.
Is there a will search in the US? Maybe Amy left one and it will have some details?
Genealiza - I think Amy lived in the Colonial Manor but I do not think it was a home. She also spent some time in Banff Springs, we also have a picture from there dated 1953. May have been a holiday, who knows.
Thanks again to everyone on this. Evelina
