Aah so your Gander/Paine yes.

James Hickmans' parents could be either
Richard and Ann (Thomas) Hickman
or
William & Mary (Baker) Hickmore

We are still trying to discover as much as possible about the families to try and decide who is who.

It would appear that the Hickmans may have started in Waldron then moved to Heathfield and then some on to Chiddingly.

Hi Kerry

Have you discovered the parents of Phyllis yet?

I have two possibles

John & Mary or Joseph & Lucy.

They both had Phyllis's born in Chiddingly and bap there in 1800.

Hi Kerry

One other thing there was a burial for a Philly Funnell in Chiddingly in 1809, Inf. Maybe that was the other one. No way of knowing which is which though, is there?

Hi Carol

Phillis was the daughter of John Funnell and Mary Willard and was baptised on 15 November 1801 at Chiddingly.  I found that on the parish registers on my last visit to ESRO.  Phillis went on to have an illegitimate son, John in 1819 who was great great great gradnfather.   She then married Richard Hickman and in 1842 they emigrated to Tasmania with their seven children.

The only information I have about Richard Hickman is that he was either born in Hellingly or Mayfield, about 1794 according to burial record and census returns.

You said in an earlier message about Richard & Phyllis emigrating in 1842.

I have found a passport application for a Richard Hickman in 1851.

Would they definately have gone in 1842 or did they hang about for a bit before they finally went?

Hi Carol

No they definitely went in 1842, I have the passenger list as well as details of their arrival in Tasmania and their lives there.

Tasmania archives are extremely helpful  Grin

Hi Kerry

How do I find out about earlier immigration please?

I have Henry Hickmer and wife Ann missing after 1841 in one family
and Henry and wife Harriet missing in another.

I know the records are on findmypast after 1890 but I need them around 1840-1850.

Many thanks

Hi Carol

There are some immigration records on Ancestry but I am not sure what years they cover.  I think I googled and came up with the Tasmanian archives site because someone told me the family I was looking for had gone there.

I hope this finds someone that can help me.

I have been researching the surname Hickmore and found Hickmer, Hickman and others in this. This thread lists some people I have in mine or I know would be in mine with the right connections and hoping someone might be able to help me and fill in some gaps I might have.

My website for this surname is : http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SRCH&db=carnage&surname=H

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Richard Hickman married to Ann Thomas is my 5th Great Grand Uncle.

Cheers
