Ooh, poppyann, some scandal attached to the family later in the 19th century - I need to dig out the articles in SFHG magazine.
A James Hickman was named as the "other man" in a murder story - the Onion Pie Murder. Sarah French murdered her husband William in 1852. She was apparently infatuated with James, who worked for his great uncle George Gander at West Street Farm in Hellingly. Sarah was found guilty at the subsequent trial but James was not punished.

The article about the Onion Pie murder was in the September 2007 issue and there was a reference to it in the latest edition which contains an article about the Hickman/Hickmer family. The author is stuck at the same point as you!
If you would like her contact details, let me know and I'll send you a pm.
There is a marriage for Thomas Hickman to Sarah Vernon in Hailsham in 1777. Thomas was recorded as being of Fletching.
There is also a settlement certificate for Thomas Hickmer and his wife of Westham dated 1780 in Hailsham parish records.

Hi
I'm new to this (this is my first post) so help me along here please.
I am researching Hickmans. James & Sarah were my 4 times great grandparents.
Another cousin and I are up to our necks in Hickmans because we are trying to work out who the parents of James are.
We have a couple of candidates, but we really need to find anyone that can verify some of these peole for us.
How do we go about sharing info?
Carol

Hi Carol and welcome to Rootschat
I too have a Hickman who married in Chiddingly and I have been unable to verify him. He was called Richard and married Phillis Funnell.
Would you be able to put down all details you might have for your James and someone might be able to help you.
Best wishes
Kerry

Hello Kerry Thank you for your welcome.
I have lots of Hickman information so I'll try to be brief.
I have Richard Hickman married to Ann Thomas who had a son James born in Hellingly c 1779.
We have now discovered that William & Mary (Baker) had a son James born in c1771.
Our basic problem at the moment is which of these James married Sarah Gander.
After delving into this family for this information it has bought up quite a few other queries.
So we now need to investigate the Lewes lot as well, although that is another day. (Which may help with Richard & Phyliss Funnell, Kerry. I have Funnells in my family as well).
How do I correspond with people through personal message? Is that the safest way to give out email addresses etc.?
Regards Carol

Hi Carol
Yes the safest way to swap emails is by PM, the Mods will delete them from the public boards. If you click on any name such as kerryb where it is highlighted in blue beside any of messages it will take you to a page about me, you then pick send this rootschatter a personal message, its towards the bottom of the page.

Hi Kerry
Thanks for that. If you would like me to keep you informed about findings just let me know. If you have excel I could send you information that way.
I shall be spending the afternoon trying to sort out all the emails I have received in the past week to try and add a bit of order to latest finds.
I'll be back. If you have anything about any of the Hickmans from Chiddingly, Heathfield, Lewes, Hellingly that might be relevant, feel free to send it.
Regards
Carol
