Hoping to make contact with descendants of the Bristol Mazzie's
« on: Monday 03 March 08 20:23 GMT (UK) »

Hi,

I am hoping to make contact with the descendants of the Bristol branch of the Mazzie family.

My Mazzie ancestors (wich was originally spelt Mazzei) originated from Lucca Province in Italy, and my Great-Great-Great Grandfather (Ferdinando Mazzei (1819-1904) settled in Cardiff. His brother, Giovanni Mazzei (1813-1872) settled in Bristol, and it is through his son, George Edward Mazzie (1865-1924) that the Bristol Mazzie name survives.

I have loads of photo's regarding the Cardiff Mazzie's, but unfortunately I don't have any of the Bristol Mazzie's. I have managed to make contact with some of George's great-grandchildren, but unfotunately none of them have any photo's.

There were 2 Bristol Mazzie's killed in WWI (Frederick Thomas Mazzie (1896-1915) and William John Mazzie (1894-1918), but for some reason they served under the surname Massey.

I have left an interesting excerpt from the Western Daily Press in 1866 about the death of one of Giovanni's children below.

With daughters marrying, some of the surname of George's ancestors may be:-

Sharpe;
Banfield;
James;
Timmins;
Rollitt;
Alway;
Lewis.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Regards,

Darin, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Hi Darin

You may remember that we have been in touch before ~ quite a while ago re your 'Annie' and my 'Lazaros'.

Having heard stories of how some Svombos were treated warily during the war because of the 'foreign' name, I am not at all surprised that your Mazzeis / Mazzies should Anglicise their name to Massey. It would have made life easier and safer for them, I would imagine.

Hi Tricia,

It's nice to hear from you.

I thought of the same reason, but I had my doubts because in World War I the Italians were fighting on the British side, so I wouldn't have thought that there would have been much "anti-Italian" feeling, as there was "anti-German" feeling.

Unless there was a general "Britishness" attitude, and all foreign nationals were scorned upon at this time.

Thanks for your reply,

Regards,

Darin.

Hi Darin.

Yes, but I cannot otherwise see why some Svombos ~ born in Wales ~ would have had problems. It seems to have been 'unBritish names, maybe??

I'd be interested to hear what more knowledgeabvle folk on here think. Smiley

Darin

I just looked up some Mazzies in Bristol on 192.com

Have you tried contacting them?

Hi Tricia,

Thanks for your message.

I wrote to 3 seperate Mazzie's from Bristol a few years back from the Bristol phone book, but only received a reply from one of them.

I also managed to contact 3 other descendants through genes reunited, but none of them seemed to know much about the Bristol side of the family, and none of them had any photo's of their descendants etc.

It was nice to be in touch with them none the less, and I sent them all the info etc that I had.

Thanks,

Darin.

I've tried to contact anyone & everyone named Svombo/ Swambo/Swanbo.

Some reply straight away; others are too busy with other commitments; some may not be interersted, but I have been surprised at how many I have seen, later, on the GenesReunited site ~ so that reply may be just a bit late arriving!

Good luck with finding all your Mazzeis!
