GGGrandfather George Pullon (1810 to 1872) lived at 10 Summerseat Place, Horton, Bradford from about 1850 until his death. A long time ago, before I was recording things properly, I was told that he was a church warden in Horton. (I'm not sure whether this is Great or Little Horton, or whether there's any difference, or even the name of the church). I've found him in listed in several directories on the historical directories site where he is described variously as a traveller and then as a stuff merchant, but I can't find anything to verify this idea of him being a church warden. Could somebody give me some idea of where to search, please? Peter

I don't know how things worked in Bradford, but if I was looking for a churchwarden in Sheffield I would check the local newspapers for the weeks either side of Easter, looking for reports of the 'Easter Vestries' - the meetings for each parish where the churchwardens would be elected/appointed for the following year.
You might also be lucky and find extant records of the churches at the churches themselves or in local archives. (you could investigate the catalogues at http://www.a2a.org.uk - 'Access to Archives')

Hi Summerseat Place is near Bradford University just off Great Horton Road. There are several churches in the area but few of them are still open as churches. The area has undergone massive reconstruction progammes in the last half of the C19th and I would imagine that some churches may have been lost at the time. If you go to http://maps.live.com/ and put Dirkhill Road in the address box. Summerseat Place is about 300 yards to the North. The round building at the corner of Great Horton Road and Durkhill Road was a church. Dave

Hi Peter, It looks like you are right, going by the names of the streets around it. My memory is failing fast, we used to go there for Christmas carol services from school, Grange just across the road, and I can't for the life of me remember the name. How did you manage to post the birds eye view ? Computer technology doesn't come easy to some of us oldies ! Dave

Well to deal with the last point first..I'm one of the oldies as well.
I brought up the picture on local live, went to full screen and hit the Print Screen button. I then opened up a new page in Photoshop and hit paste. Then it was just a matter of cropping the picture.
But I think it's the wrong church anyway . I think that the church I'm looking for is St John (BD7 4AB) next to Tesco's superstore. I've found an email on my old pc that I sent to my cousin in Canada in 2005 mentioning that church and the fact that the entry had been found on the WYAS. Now all I've got to do is find it for myself. Peter

St. John the Evangelist Great Horton Parish Church. Next to Tescos as you say. Higher up Gt. Horton Rd. Go S.W. past Beckside Rd and it is on the right (North) Saint Street I think. Dave PS thanks for the photo posting info.

Thank you for the picture, Dave. An impressive church. I've found the entry in the WYAS catalogue, so I suppose I've answered my own query. Peter
