Completed - MAY family, Cullompton / Bradninch 1830s
« on: Monday 03 March 08 20:46 GMT (UK) »

Would anybody have access to the parish records for Cullompton or Bradninch please?  I'm trying to find the baptism of William May circa 1836.  He seems to have been a bit vague about his birthplace in the censuses, sometimes saying Cullompton, other times Bradninch and once Tiverton.  His marriage certificate says his father was William May, dairyman, and in the 1841 census he is aged five, living at Knowle in the parish of Cullompton with a 25 year old William May (presumably his father), 35 year old Susan (mother?), 7 year old Ann and 3 year old Elizabeth - possibly sisters.  By 1851 he was away from home, so I can't confirm those relationships.

Any help gratefully received.
Many thanks
Richard.

hi Richard, i think i've found your OPR entry + couple of extras Smiley

William May
parents: William & Susan
dad's occ. husbandman
addr.: Downhead farm
bapt. 26 Jly 1835

siblings:
Ann May
parents: Wm & Susannah,
dad's occ.: husbandman
addr.: Downhead Tenement [sic]
bapt.: 4 Nov 1832

Elizth May
parents: Wm & Susan
dad's occ.: husbandman
addr.: Bradninch
bapt: 16 Sept 1838

I looked to see if there was a marriage, but no such luck.  If the lassie wasn't from Bradninch, they may have married on her home patch.

hope that lets you get on a bit   Smiley

Hi Fionnghal

Thank you so much for that - it's a great help.  Many thanks also for looking up the sisters, and looking for a marriage.  Do I take it all the baptisms you found are at Bradninch?
Many thanks

hi Richard, i did answer this but what happened to it i haven't a clue!   Huh

yes, it was indeed the Bradninch OPRs

I also ascertained that there was an Elizth May birth recorded in the GRO who probably matches your Elizabeth:

Sep quarter 1838, Elizabeth May, Tiverton vol.10 pg.255

to find out mum, Susan's surname, you could contact General Register House
http://www.gro.gov.uk/content/
and apply for Elizabeth's birth lines [naming William & Susan/ah as parents just to ensure that you've got the right Elizth.]

It's the next best thing to getting William's as he was born just a shade too early to make the 1837 registration.

Sorry about my previous answer.  must still be circulating the planet

Hi Fionnghal - thanks for that.  Good idea to get his sister's birth certificate - I shall investigate.
Thanks
Richard.
