Iria I have looked in the 1839 but there is no Edward Garners at all.In the 1841 there is a big black stain on the page with a couple of surnames under it i think.Because i cant find Garner. There were quiet a few Harold but none had any of the given or near occupations I didn't have time to look in the 43.I will put that on the still missing page

Hi Celia (or Erika?)
I'm looking for a William Unwin (b about 1815) who was a 66yr boatman in 1881 and a 75yr retired boatman in 1891. In an extract from the Liverpool Mercury (about 1864) there was a regatta on the Mersey and a William Unwin with a boat called "Prosperity".
Just wondering if he could be in a liverpool directory about 1840, to give some more info.
Thanks, John

Hi John
Have looked in the 1843 directory, but no William Unwin, just a Charles, 2 Johns and a Robert. None are boatmen. Do you have an address?
Cheers Erika

Hi Erika
Sorry, he only crops up in 1881 as a widower, living with my ggggrandmother Alice Unwin (also a widow) and her niece Catherine [on the census, her niece is her daughter and the 66yr William is her son (she was 55 in 1881)]. He is still with Alice in 1891, so I assume he must be related.
Can you give me the address + occupation of the Unwins you have found, as they are probably part of the family.
Thanks a lot, John

John If he only crops up in the 1881 census, maybe the 1840's are to early to find him.Even if he was in the regatta,he might not have necessarily have lived in Liverpool. There isn't a directory for 1840 they were only printed every other year. I can track him back to the 1871 and see if he appears between the census of 1881.It wont be untill the libraries reopen next thursday though.

Hi Celia
I can't find William Unwin in census' before 1881, where he crops up as a 66year-old, born Liverpool. Perhaps he was a mariner who became a boatman in later life?
I would be made up if you could find him in any year, as it may help in finding out where he belongs in our Unwin family.
Thanks, John
