Can anyone please direct me, my G-Grandfather and his father both called James Freeman, where Wheelwrights working in Liverpool. I’m looking for any organisation in the Lancashire area where they would have to register after their apprenticeships. I have contacted the Livery Companies in London but they cannot help with this kind or request.

James Freeman. 1828 Wheelwright Vauxhall Road.
James Freeman 1851 Census Wheelwright Mason St, 1 Court, West Derby
James Freeman 1861 Census Wheelwright 9 Union Court, Bolton St, West Derby.

Thanks
Stan.

one of my ancestors was down as a wheelwright, but he was a joiner by trade. you could try looking for yours as a joiner.

When you say that you contacted the London Livery Companies do you mean that you contacted the Wheelwrights' Company?

All their records have been deposited at the Guildhall Library.  However despite the fact that the company was formed in 1670 the masters, apprentices and assistants declarations which is what you probably want have been lost prior to 1883.

The only hope that you have is that there is some local record.  There are a number of places to look for these.

The county record office.
The guildhall of the town or city where they were working.
The main county reference library.

You can also try putting your grandfather's name into:

http://www.a2a.org.uk/

You may find something.

Thanks David, for that information. Yes I contacted the Wheelwrights company via the web address, I’m in Liverpool town centre next Saturday so I will drop-in-to the Central Library. The link for a2a has come up with over three and a half thousand hits, so will have to wait until I have a couple of hours to spare.

I suggest that you refine your search on A2A.

I presume that you had already just searched the Lancashire Archive'

Try putting in:

name NEAR20 wheelwright

The "NEAR20" means that you are looking for the two within 20 words of each other
