McCarrick marriage

Francis McCarrick (b. <1798>, Sligo) married Mary Ferguson (b.<1808>, Sligo). First child we have is born Ireland <1829>, so marriage by then presumably in Ireland. Family to England and others born there, first birth we have there is 1835.
Any ideas?

Hello Lynne,

There are three items you require when searching for Irish ancestors.

1. Denomination.
2. Parish
3. Townland. 

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Know any simpler ways to search for Sligo christenings than the hit and miss arrangements of odds on IGI or individual sites?

Church records (if they exist for such early dates) might have been microfilmed by LDS. If so, you can order them for a small fee from your local LDS library to view there. You have to know the family's religion and where they lived (parish if not actual townland not just the county).

Hi Lynne,

I looked at Irish Ancestors Surname Search to see if the names Ferguson and McCarrick appeared in the same parish at the time of Griffith's Valuation. The answer to that is Yes.

The next step is to have a look at John Hayes failteromhat.com/griffiths.php to see what parish or parishes the names appear. If you are lucky they may also appear in the same townland.

were in uk did they go as i have a elizabeth mccarrick married to a thomas pearson born in 1872
elizabeth born in 1882
any info on family wecomed
the family are said to have come from sligo

I'm assuming that Elizabeth was the daughter of Peter McCarrick and Ellen Mannion who was baptised at St Joseph's, Gateshead in 1881 the year before you state. If this is the correct family, Peter and Ellen married at Newcastle in 1861 just before the Census and were living in with Peter's parents John and Bridget McCarrick when the Census was taken. John and Bridget had a son Thomas born Newcastle 1850 so if you can trace that birth you will find Bridget's maiden name.

The 1881 census indicates that Peter and his wife Ellen plus his widowed mother Bridget were all born Sligo. Elizabeth was born a few months after this census was taken but is included with the same family in 1891.

the mccarrick family were cusins to riley family from sligo
i will check on ancestry

elizabeth mccarrick (pearson) married in st joseph's in blaydon on tyne around 1898/99
as first born was in 1899
john pearson born in 1899

peter mccarrick was a lawyer would he have started in sligo or in uk
i have been on the net and found some mccarricks in kilconduff/killasser/gallen in mayo
they seam to have had some land in sligo and mayo
would they be record's of peter starting out as a lawyer
