Black, Fleming, Watt, Adam Families Brechin
« on: Tuesday 04 March 08 07:24 GMT (UK) »

One of our family lines is from David Black, born about 1800 in Fearn, died 15 May 1875 in Brechin.  His father was also David Black and mother was Isabel Fleming.  He married Ann Watt (b1817, Fordoun, Kincardine; father ? Watt, mother Mary Adam, d 23 Jan 1864 Legg's Acre, Brechin) on 30 July 1842 in Laurencekirk, Kincardine and had 7 children, including Jessie Murray Black who emigrated to NZ about 1885 and married my GGFather John Pearson.  We have 1851, 1861 & 1871 census records and death registrations for David and Ann.

If anyone has further information on any of these families, I'd love to hear back.

Hi,

I'm not too sure if you have these records, but here we go. Wink There's two children showing for David Black and Isabel Fleming:

  • David, bapt. 27th February 1800 in Fern - parents David B and Isabel Fleming
  • Alexander, bapt. 12th January 1802 in Fern - parents David B and Isabel Fleming

Only one daughter showing for Robert Watt and Mary Adam:

  • Ann Watt, born 23rd February 1817 and bapt. 28th October 1817 in Bervie, Kincardine - parents Robert W and Mary Adam

Hope this helps.

Hi again,

I believe your David's brother, Alexander (bapt. 1802) married Elizabeth Dalgety on the 16th of August 1824 in Arbroath. Children (all St Vigeans born) listed for them are:

  • David, bapt. 22nd May 1825
  • Alexander Dalgety, bapt. 9th October 1826
  • Isobel Dalgety, born 30th May & bapt. 8th June 1829
  • Margaret, born 1832 (submitted)
  • Jane Dalgety, bapt. 23rd July 1835
  • Duncan, bapt. 6th September 1837
  • Thomas Dalgetty, bapt. 25th September 1839
  • Simon Dalgetty, bapt. 26th January 1842
  • William, born 23rd December 1846 & bapt. 3rd January 1847

Here they are on the 1851 census:

Address: Cairnie Street, St Vigeans, Angus
Alexander Black, m, head, 49, flax millwright (journeyman), Fearn, Forfarshire
Elizabeth ", f, wife, 47, -, Arbroath, Forfarshire
Isabella ", f, dau., 21, flax spinner (reeler), St. Vigeans, Forfarshire
Margaret ", f, dau., 19, flax spinner, St. Vigeans, Forfarshire
Duncan ", m, son, 13, flax spinner (rover), St. Vigeans, Forfarshire
Thomas ", m, son, 11, scholar, St. Vigeans, Forfarshire
Lunon [Simon?] ", m, son, 9, scholar, St. Vigeans, Forfarshire

A family tree on Ancestry notes that Alexander died 25th October 1881 in St. Vigeans, aged 79.

1841 entry for David ...

Address: Leg's Acre, Brechin
David Black, m, 35, ag lab, born in county

I can't see Ann straight away, but there's a few possibles; mostly female servants, living away from home.

Well done!  I missed the 1841 census details for DB because his birth date was shown at 1806.

With regard to Alexander, I see he was living with Elizabeth and son Thomas in Arbroath in 1861.  In 1871, he and Elizabeth have their daughter Isobel (Isabella) who is a ship captains wife and her children Alexander (27, scholar; age wrong - should be 7), Isabella (13), George (10) and Barbara M (3).

In 1881 he and Elizabeth are living on their own.  This would be a few months before he died.  Shown separately but at the same address (22 Fergus St, Arbroath) is Isabella, her retired shipmaster husband George Ferguson and children Isabella, George, Alexander and Barbara.

You've referred to a family tree on Ancestry with Alexander in it.  Can you point me to this as I can't find it.

Thanks

No problem. On the family tree section, pop in Alexander's name. Don't put in his parents' names as they're not listed. Put it in his birth year (1802) and then his death (1881), and it should be the only one that appears. Smiley

Talking about he and David's parents ... do you know David Black Snr's occupation? I just notice there is an 1823 inventory on ScotlandsPeople for a Mrs. David Black, wife of a writer (lawyer, I think?) in Brechin. David Jnr's will (1875, 9 pages long) is available for purchase too.

Back again.  My wife and I have been on a wine tasting weekend up in Marlborough, the new world home of sauvignon blanc.  Got back and our new computer didn't want to know us any more.  Fought our way in after a few hours of frustration.

Found the famly tree thankyou.  I had been looking in the OneWorldTree area rather than Family Trees.  Gradually getting to know my round the site.

I don't know any more about David Black snr than in my first posting.  I guess its possible that he was a writer/lawyer, although you might expect his sons to be higher in the world than as an agricultural labourer and a flax spinning millwright.

What's the best way to buy David jnr's will?  This is all new to me.

Do you know any more about David jnr's children?    The details we have are as follows:
David - b 10 Oct 1842, Brechin

Isabel - b 23 Jun 1844

? -

James - b 18 Jul 1847 Brechin

Mary Ann b 21 July Brechin.  There was a Mary Ann BLACK b Brechin, aged 29, (should be 30) unmarried, domestic servant tablemaid living at 6 Grosvenor Cres, at the time of the 1881 Census.  Other occupants were an eight year old boy, two middle-aged female visitors, and three other female servants.  Census Place: Edinburgh St Georges; Ref no: 696385.  May not be our Mary Ann.

Jessie b 1853/4 Brechin.  d 20 Apr 1919 Dunedin, NZ.  1871 census: with Whitson family in Brechin.  Emigrated to NZ about 1866, possibly on the Rimutaka.  Married John Pearson 1888, Lawrence, NZ. My great grandparents.

Agnes Black b 18 Mar 1857, Brechin

Sorry, my Ancestry account has just expired - typical! Sad So for the time being, I'm unable to do any census look-ups.

However, I recommend you check out ScotlandsPeople for David jnr's will. It is available to purchase and view online for the cost of £5, reasonable for the amount of information that could be contained within! Smiley
