At a loss to find a mystery death - George H Garton
« on: Tuesday 04 March 08 10:33 GMT (UK) »

Hi All,

I am trying to find the death of George Hookham Garton from HUll.

As brief as I can - on my Mothers side (she told me very little of her family) Her parents were a George Hookham Garton and a Lilly Measham. They Married in 1901. George Garton was supposed to have died when my Mother was about 10. She was born 01/09/1912. I have looked at all the Deaths (England and Wales GRO) around that time and because I did not find my George Garton I worked back and forward. I have every George Garton from 1914 to 1941 ! !. He is not there? Wrong ages. Those close to his age ie 3 or 4 years,  were ordered up but he is not them. Huh

My Mother married in 1941 and on the marriage cert her father is listed as a Jewellers Assistant DECEASED. (He had been a Pawnbrokers assistant before).

I have gone through my papers and note something interesting....comments welcome please...On the death Cert for her Mother Lilly (dod 1935) she is listed as " Wife of George Garton" etc If he had died earlier then she should have been listed as "widow of "......... Huh

I was told very little by my Mother......but if,  for example he ran off -  Shocked  this might explain some things?

I have found George Garton as listed at 10  Argyle Street Hull in 1916 St Directory but in 1925 Lilly Garton is listed there. I suspect he left/died between those dates. If he died there is no record in the England/Wales GRO. I do not think he would be outside Yorkshire.........nor England/Wales

Any help or suggestions for going forward please.

Thanks

Peter

When you were searching for George's death, did you look for his parents' deaths?
They were alive in 1901 (Thomas Garton, 55; Sarah Jane, 48). They may have left a will which mentions George (or doesn't mention him, suggesting he may have died before them).

I noticed this death:
Mar 1921 Thomas Garton, 75, Glanford Brigg (in Lincs where Sarah Jane Hookham was born)
..but it may be unconnected.

Hi Richard,

I have the family tree back through Thomas Garton and Sarah Jane Hookham and back to a Robert Garton 1812 and Mary Sproxton 1811. I did not have the death of Thomas recorded, but your entry of 1921 looks good (Free BMD site??). Thomas was born Sept 1844.....so he would have been 77 not 75 at death, but you will see that his age is wrong in the 1901 census etc.

George Hookam Garton, his son, was the father to my Mum per her birth cert and she was born 01/09/1912 so I have assumed that to be correct.

I am at a loss to tie in her story that he died when she was about 10. ie 1922. You will see that the name in the SD for 10 Argyle Street changed from George H Garton to Lilly his wife between 1916 and 1925. Could it be that if his father...Thomas died in 1921 and left him a bit of money and he might have deceided to "jump ship" and clear off?..... Shocked Shocked The 1920's were hard times.

All options are being considered and the possible death of Thomas around that time may be important.

Thanks for you input it has made think of this other option, but how do I find the dod of George H Garton?

Regards and thanks again

I'm still trying to find the death of my great grandad, Arthur Willoughby Simon but the registar have checked all records and nothing!

She said he's either very very old old now(  Tongue ) or he turned up as a John Doe and was never claimed.

I'll keep looking, who knows, one day........

Hi Peter,

While this might not connect with your line of enquiry, I have a George GARTON, merchant (tar and turpentine distiller) of Hull, husband of Elizabeth Chapman (1790-1833). They were married on 9 March 1815 at Church of All Saints, Kilnwick ERY.

You should check the Driffield Online Forum for this thread while there are several mentions of Chapmans and Gartons. http://www.driffield.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1198

Hi Riley,
Thanks for the information and the link. I know that there lots of Gartons in the Driffield areas but as yet have not made any direct connection to them. I have some Gartons from Driffield area living at a known address to me but they occupied it some 25-30 yrs before my ones. Might be some connection back a generation or two?
Thanks again.

Regards
