emigrating Taylor family?
« on: Tuesday 04 March 08 17:44 GMT (UK) »

Looking for a certian Taylor family in the 1851 census.. possibly E Yorkhire.. but I'm not sure.. could be some connection with my Stephenson rellies.. but again I'm not sure.  What I do have, is ..  a family of William Taylor age 31.. wife Myron 26.. plus children Henry 3 and Hannah 2, boarded a ship called 'Ross' on about Sept 24 at Hull .. and after 49 days (Nov 12) they docked at New York. My Stephenson family came to the Hamilton area in Ontario .. but a search of the us census finds a likely Taylor family in Lenawee Michigan, listed as William Taylor 37 and wife Miriam 34.. plus Henry and Hannah (the ship recording of Myron.. may be a misprint). So in the UK 1851 census I am looking for a William Taylor age 28-29/wife Myron or Miriam/ and possible son Henry a few months old. Again as they left Hull, they were likely from that area.
I am looking for them, because there is a family story that a baby died at sea, when my Stephensons were coming... and ship records do list these Taylors as having an infant who died at sea, on the same ship.

William Stephenson - born 1814 at Doncaster West Yorkshire - married Mary Scott at Cottingham East Yorkshire (Hull) in 1838. Williams parents I believe were another Wm Stephenson and an Alice Carter - married Cantley Parish W Yorks (Doncaster) in 1811..... Other east riding names are Nicholls (Bridlington, Yorks and Wigan Lancs.) and the surname Withernwick.

Yes, I would say that is them, they got on a ship called the 'Ross' around Sept 24 1854.. with 27 other passengers.. and lost a child (born dead?) at sea. My rellies were a Mary Stephenson (nee Scott) and her 5 children (all from around Cottingham) plus 3 more Scotts and a William and Elizabeth Withernwick .. all also on same ship.  I see that Frodingham is N E of Beverley in E Yorks. Thanks for finding that
