Accessibility to churches in your part of the world...
« on: Tuesday 04 March 08 19:36 UTC (UK) »

Hi, Everyone,
As the result of a quite positive experience I had today in deepest Suffolk, I was wondering how Rootschatters are presently finding access to parish churches throughout the kingdom.  Things have changed over the past few years, with vandalism and theft causing more churches to be locked against visitors/intruders.  Location and security are factors,of course, so today I was delighted, when unable to turn the handle and open the door of Sapiston church, to read a printed note of encouragement in the porch which told me to persevere, push a little harder, the handle definitely had to be turned to the right.
And so I did, and in I tumbled into the church in Sapiston, which is in fact no longer used for services but had some fascinating individual features nonetheless.  Well worth the visit...

Hi keith,

Glad you had a good day  Grin
I've always been disappointed when I have been unable to get into a Church I have visited because it was locked. I love the fact that I am standing in the same place that my ancestors once stood.  Grin

Although to be fair that has only happened a couple of times on my travels, I thought I had got locked in one time though, that was a heart stopping moment Shocked

Zoe,
Reading that message in the church porch today felt a bit like a scene from Alice in Wonderland for a while!  And I too nearly got locked in Ickleton Church in Cambs when an overenthusiastic young son-of-the-churchwarden turned the key on the outside without checking if there was anybody still inside at closing time, 6 o'clock in this case...

I bet it was Zoe  Shocked

I have visited quite a few of the East Sussex churches where my ancestors have been before me and a few in Surrey and West Sussex and I can't remember ever being locked out.  That would be very disappointing.

When I started looking for graves I have to admit I didn't even bother going inside the Churches but now I find them as interesting as the graves that I may find.  One of the few places left in this busy world where you can go and sit and enjoy a few moments of quiet solitude and reflect on who might have sat in the same seat.

I'm glad you enjoyed your visit Keith  Cheesy
