Barker/or Baker?
« on: Wednesday 05 March 08 13:57 GMT (UK) »

Hello there,
I am looking for a family with this surname;  Hilda Barker? married my uncle Ted Bird  who eventually went to live in Taunton Somerset.  He was a male nurse after he came out of the RAF.  I dont think aunt Hilda worked.  She was born in Higham Ferrers Northants;  they are both gone now but obviously I need the info for my tree.  Hilda apparently had a son by another man while my uncle was a way in the war and when he returned he said he would still marry her but would not take the child.  Which sadly is what happened.  Hilda was born about 1898 ish i beleive;  If anyone has any idea how i can find more about her famly please get in touch -  eise

You really need their marriage cert -which would give fathers names and occupations .

have you any idea of when they married ?

Or when they died?
If they died between 1983-2004 it is relatively easy to look up their death reg -which will possibly give an exact date of birth too.

Do you know their full names?

Did they have a middle name??

Any information you have can help

There is 1901 census -this family (in the area you said Hilda was born in)

61 newton Rd Rushden Nrthants
Thomas barker head M 44 chimney sweep employer olney Bucks
Eliza wife 42 Rushden Northants
Mary daughter 20 Boot fitter Rushden
Emily daughter 18 Bootfitter Rushden
Charles son 17 Boot Clicker Rushden
Spencer son 15 House Painter Beds
Frederick J son 13 Rushden
Alfred T son 9 Wollaston Northants
Sidney son 6 Rushden
HILDA daughter 3 Rusheden
RG13 1441 6 4

I have found a birth reg for Francis Hilda barker
Mar qtr 1898 Wellingborough
3b 145
Maybe she used her middle name?

Of course this is all guesswork -you need some documentation to be certain

Hi Suz,
Thanks for your kind info.  I have intentions to get their marriage cert but cant find their marriage  will keep looking.  The family in Newton Road looks promising but i was told she lived in higham which is the next town and joins onto Rushden.  I will speak to my family about this thanks Suz.

On the 1901 census
address is newton Rd
Town/village Rushden
Civil Parish Rushden (part of)
Eccliastical Parish Rushden St mary (part of)
Urban district Rushden
Registration district Wellingborough
Sub registration district Higham Ferrars

present day address for businesses in Newton Rd is given as newton Rd, near Higham ferrars Rushden

so the family found are in the right area

Did they have any children?  Often the marriage takes place 1-2 years before birth of the first child and could narrow down the time scale to search

Hello Suz,
No they did not have any children, however I have now discovered it is Baker not Barker and I have been told by my aunt that Hilda gave birth to a boy and uncle Ted was not the father.  He was away serving in the RAF at the ime.  On his return they were going to eb marriaed but apparently he would not take the boy on who was a huge surprise to him naturally.  They married but the boy did not go with htem to their new home. I have no idea where they married and cannot find them on FreeBMD;  I only know uncle Ted joined the nursing service on his return and they wenmt to live in Taunton.  Somerset. I will keep trying.  The 1911 census could be a help I think but itsnt for another 3/4 years.  Eise

Right to correct all errors... of mine.   Hilda was a definite Barker her middle name was Gertrude and they married in 1938 in Higham ferrers i have just ordered a marriage cert.  I am now hoping to find the son she had who was not Teds child.   The marriage cert will hopefully give us hildas parents which is something to work on;  Not knowing his name is a hard one but as you can see i have progressed now in this search.  thanks to all for their input;  Eise
