About Wellington Archives
« on: Friday 25 April 08 05:38 BST (UK) »

I am trying to help a friend find out more about her Great Great Grandfather,James Farrell who came to NZ on the Rob Roy in 1860,and have found two items of interest in the Archives NZ site.

Although I live in NZ,I have never had to do this before as all my ancestors were poms.

What I have found are the probate of his will and something to do with his Naval-Military land claim.I could find how much they will charge for the probate, but nothing fixed for the land papers.Does this mean they will charge by the hour for that?
I would also appreciate some advice on what type of information these documents will contain, and would I be better to get a death certificate?.
We know when he came to NZ he had three children, but were hoping to find out if there were more born in NZ and possibly who his two daughters married.
Thanks in advance Smiley

Hi Ellvera,

Just noticed your post. If you have any NZ specific questions, it's better to post them on the Emigrants to NZ board - much more likely to get a response.  Smiley

As regards the archives documents ... probates can hold really useful information. There will be a copy of the will usually with names of spouse and children if they have been left something. Sometimes you get siblings too. A death cert printout will give you number and ages of living issue but not usually names. The death cert will also give you DOB, POB and parents' names... but if you have these already, the probate might be better.
As for the land papers, if you have the archives reference (click on "more details" to get this from your search result) I imagine they will only charge you for the photocopies as they do with the probates.
You could try posting a look up request for Wellington Archives on the NZ board. Someone might be going in and may be able to note down the details for you.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Stephanie

Thanks Stephanie - what an idiot I am,I thought I had posted on the NZ Board  Huh
I will do as you say, and ask for a lookup.I thought it might be too time consuming when I don't know how big the file would be.
Appreciate your help
