Burton on trent - Cooperage House?
« on: Wednesday 05 March 08 22:16 GMT (UK) »

Can anyone tell me anything about this address? I have traced my father's family, Blessingtons, as living at Cooperage House, Wetmore Rd. in the early 1900's.

Was it a property that had anything to do with any of the breweries, and is it still there?

Any help at all would be appreciated,

    Thanks, Pat.

Dear Pat
A lot of houses have been demolished on Wetmore Road (formerly Anderstaff Lane), so it may no longer be there.  The obvious possibility for a cooperage is the Allsopp's Middle Yard Cooperage.  Often there were workers' houses provided locally for a particularly plant.  If you tell me the numbers of houses nearby I will see if it might still exist.

The Blessington family lived at no.16 Wetmore Rd, and it was known as Cooperage house on the obituary notice for James Blessington, who was killed in WW1.
I know my Grandfather worked for one of the breweries - the names Bass and Ind Coope ring bells, but this is his parents house, and whether or not his father was a brewery worker too I don't know.
It just sounded like an address that would have some sort of  meaning,
   Thanks for your help,

 dear Pat
Most of the houses in  burton were owned by the various breweries, and your's definitely would be.  Are you local.  A look at Cook's Directory of I think 1900 might be useful here.  Also the Censuses would show you who else was living in the area etc.  I will take a walk into town via WetmoreRoad and see if no 16 is still there. Hi LFS,
Thanks again for your reply. No, I don't know the Burton on Trent area at all - I live in Worksop, Notts. My Grandfather moved here from Burton sometime after 1915. I have not been able to trace any of my Grandfather's siblings and haven't a clue whether or not any Blessingtons still live in Burton.
I have written this weekend to someone in Ashby de la Zouch who was in the online Staffordshire phone book - the only Blessington I could find, so hopefully I may get a lead there.
  Thanks again for your help,
     Cheers, Pat.

Dear Pat
No luck I'm afraid.  Only a few houses left on that side of the road at all.  No 16 would have been where the health centre is, I think.

Hi LPS,  Thanks for looking for me anyway. It is difficult to find out about an area that you don't know, and help from people like you is invaluable,
   Thanks again,

Any time Pat
Unfortunately I don't know what the demolished houses were like, though the remaining ones are mostly smallish terraced houses.  Since the demolished ones would have been interspersed with industrial buildings I suspect they were also small terraces, but don't know.  Yours might have been one of the few double-fronted ones.  Round the corner in Horninglow Street are lots of large Georgian houses, some fronting old breweries.  If I can help further let me know.

Thanks LPS,
I really am trying to locate other relatives to siblings of my Grandfather, so, perhaps sometime I may come across someone who has more information. I live in hope anyway.
Thanks again for lokking around for me,
       Cheers, Pat.
