1901 census is first complete census for all Ireland- only a few fragments of earlier ones survive for a few places- no earlier ones for Co. Tyrone. Were Christopher Donnelly and his wife actually from County Tyrone?

not 100% sure if it was definitly tyrone or co mayo, all i know is that their son christopher emigrated to scotland he was B 1843,and was also called christopher he married and had 7 children, the christopher/donnelly i am trying to trace stayed over and may have been deceased when his son married, but it does not say so on marriage certificate.I have srolled the internet for weeks now and cannot find any clues.he may well have had brothers as he was of catholic origin, but again i am stuck on this one,I know the donnellys were a big family, but didn't realise this big.regards katrina

Think that you really need to have a better idea of where your Donnellys lived in Ireland before you start looking for information in Ireland as the name is not unusual here. Guessing which county where they might have lived is not going to help you find information and only making needless work for others. To research in Ireland you really need to know where a family lived (parish if not actual townland not just a county or possible one) and their religion so that you can search for church records (if they still exist).

Hi Katrina,
Irish Ancestors Surname Search, which is based on Griffith's Valuation of 1848-64, shows that the Donnelly and McGovern surnames appeared in the same parish in the same county on the list shown below .. that means unless you can dig up some further information the search looks as though it could be somewhat time consuming ..
Armagh, Belfast city, Cavan, Derry, Donegal, Down, Dublin, Dublin city, Fermanagh, Galway, Kildare, Laois, Leitrim, Longford, Louth, Mayo, Meath, Monaghan, Roscommon, Sligo, Tyrone and Westmeath.

Hi there Im a newbie and just stumbled on this. I was looking into my ancestors a while back and Christopher Donnelly and Catherine McGovern are some of mine. I live in Paisley Scotland, one of their sons Christopher came over and settled here. Its quite late now and Iv got to go to sleep so I havnt got time to read all the posts relating to Christopher, but I cant wait to read them...maybe I have some information which may be of interest.

I was told by my grandad that they came from Tyrone, and maybe he was repeating things he was told, but he said they had boats, so I thought they might have lived near a river, the sea or a lough

Not much water in Co. Tyrone (it's inland so no sea but some of it's along the shore of Lough Neagh- largest lake in British Isles).

There's a three hundred year old fisherman's cottage, still standing, in the townland of Aneeterbeg at Ardboe
