So George was a vicar too, and his father a Canon - and a brush with royalty!
Cambridgeshire alumni tells us that George's father was William, b. 1754, 2nd s. of William, mercer, of Penrith. William was Preceptor to the sons of George III in 1780 and married Dorothy, dau. of John Cowper, R. of Penrith, Oct. 17, 1788.

Wow Tati - this is really taking off!

IGI has lots of Cooksons in Penrith - we have found their roots at last!

Christening 26 Dec 1754
St Andrews Penrith
William son of William and Dorothy

(that would mean both his mum and his wife were Dorothys - how they like to confuse us!)

Just to flip back to William ( the son of George n Eliz, the one who spent his carerr in the Navy and married the German lass)
He has died between 1891 and 1901. Interesting entry in 1901 for his daughter Eveline nee Cookson and her family:

1901:
Bristol 1 Albert Road (obviously a school boarding house!)

Charles Spence  42 Schoolmaster Clifton College, bn Cheshire Rock Ferry
Eveline L wife 27 bn Frome Somerset
Percy W H Kettlewell house Tutor 32 School master Clifton College, Clerk in holy Orders
Louisa H Cookson mother-in-law widow bn Germany
then lots of matrons, dormitory maids etc, followed by a long list of schoolboys!!

William Edgar de C Cookson
age 62
Axminster Devon 5b 1

Right - that's him sorted! though you could well find out more about him if you tried to follow up his Naval Career via National Archives at Kew, I dont know.

Some photos of Powerstock here:

http://www.imagesofdorset.org.uk/Dorset/106/intro.htm

I dont know if they are the same as Beth found earlier.

I guess the church will be the one that George was vicar of, in the 1830's.

Aha - now I know you said you had got Osmond in later censuses, but of course I couldnt resist a squint myself!

In 1891, when he is a Holbeck Yorkshire, I see sister Adela is with him. So that is another gap in her life filled. He has a 10 yr old son Percy by then too. (modified - just seen in 1881 that he has 8yr old Percy with him - perhaps Percy is 18 in 1891 then and I misread it at 10)

In 1901 he is in Elmstead Essex, and has a daughter in law who was born in Australia with him (amongst many others)! That I guess must be wife of Herbert HArry O , or Percy, but neither are there. (modified - see later, Herbert Harry O is still single in 1901, so Australian wife must be Percy's!)

thanks to all of you!
I have a lot of information thanks to you.
They really were involved in the church their entire life and over a few generations.
Mabel Cookson, who was Osmond's daughter, married firstly to Alexander Crombie, of which there is a load of information about him.  He was also from a line of people who were very active.
She married a second time to a Major Hoaten, of which I have no information.  As Major Hoaten was in Rhodesia (now called Zimbabwe) information is not readily available.

Thanks again,
Regards

Just thought I would put a note on this topic.
Osmond, great grandfather, William Cookson who was married in 1744 to Dorothy Crackenthorpe, had a daughter Ann Cookson.  Ann married John Wordsworth and they had 5 children, one of them being the poet William Wordsworth. This would make Osmond's father being William Wordsworth cousin.
I have found a lot of information on this family.  It just seems to grow as I google:)

Many thanks to all of you again.

Regards
