Hi Jaz

I've got copies of the microfiche for Rushall parish registers, so had a quick look for your family. They are certainly interesting  Smiley Is the James Cook you want the one who was married to Hannah and had (amongst others) children Emma (abt 1825), Elizabeth (abt 1827), George (abt 1828), Stephen (1832), William (1834) ?

If so, the family appears to be known as Cook Deane prior to about 1830, then becoming Cook after that.

If thits sounds like the right one, I'll post James and Hannah's children's baptisms for you. I think James may have married as Deane rather than Cook or Cook Dean to Hannah Harris - Rushall 4 Nov 1822 by banns, witnesses George Deane and William Porter.

I haven't found a reason for the 2 names, but if it looks like the right family, I'll investigate further for you.

Regards

Hi Jaz

Glad it looks like the right family!

I've just rechecked the marriage and it is James Deane and Hannah Harris as I mentioned before. I forgot to say that all parties, including witnesses appear to be unable to write as they all signed with an X

Now for the children's baptisms - nothing before 1825, which seems a bit odd, and then, from the Rushall baptism register -

13 Nov 1825 Amy daughter of James and Hannah Cook Dean of Rushall, labourer (presume this is the similar sounding Emma in the census)
28 Oct 1827 Elizabeth daughter of James and Hannah Cook Dean of Rushall, higgler Huh
21 Feb 1830 George son of James and Hannah Cook Deane of Rushall, labourer
15 Apr 1832 Stephen son of James and Hannah Cook of Rushall, labourer
30 Mar 1834 William son of James and Hannah Cook of Rushall, labourer
30 Oct 1836 John son of James and Hannah Cook of Rushall, labourer
7 Nov 1841 Sarah daughter of James and Hannah Cook of Rushall, labourer

No sign of a baptism for Mary Ann though, either in Rushall or in neighbouring Charlton, so I'm not sure what happened there  Sad

At the same time as James and Hannah were having their children baptised, there was another  Cook Dean couple with children - Charles and Anne, and their name magically changed to Cook around 1830 as well. Perhaps Charles and James were brothers or something. Anyway, I'll see what I can find about James and post again

Hi again Jaz

Right - I've found James's baptism in Rushall -
"29 Sep 1799 James, son of John Cooke Deane, labourer, and Elizabeth his wife was baptised."

I don't have the Wedhampton registers, unfortunately, so can't look up Hannah.

Looking for other Deane/Cook/Cook Deane combinations, I found -

"30 Oct 1796 Susanna, daughter of John Cooke Deane, labourer and Elizabeth his wife was baptised"
"27 Dec 1801 Charles, son of John Cooke Deane, labourer,  and Elizabeth his wife was baptised"
"19 Feb 1804 Jane, daughter of John Cooke Deane, labourer, and Elizabeth his wife was baptised"
"29? Nov 1806 William, son of John Cook Deane, labourer, and Elizabeth his wife was baptised"
"23 Jul 1809 Ambrose, son of John Cook Deane, labourer, and Elizabeth his wife as baptised"
"16 Aug 1812 Maria, daughter of John Cook, labourer , and Elizabeth his wife was baptised"  (First mention of a Cook without a Deane)
"30 Apr 1815 Harriet daughter of John & Elizabeth Cook Dean of Rushall, labourer (baptised)"
"July 9 1820 John son of John Cook and Elizabeth (surname)Deane of Rushall, labourer (baptised)"

I haven't unfortunately, been able to find John and Elizabeth's marriage in Rushall so far, nor can I find a baptism for John, so he may have come from elsewhere. By 1841, all the children I've been able to find in the census seem to have adopted the name Cook.

If you'd like me to check up other entries in Rushall (eg I think I've found some of John and Elizabeth's childrens' marriages) please do say...

Regards

Hi Jaz

Just had a look at the Rushall marriages and found these.....

Charles Cook of this parish and Ann Waight of the parish of Charlton were married by banns this fourth day of December  in the year one thousand eight hundred and twenty four. Witnesses Ginny(?) Wait and Mary Rickett. (All signed with X except first witness

William Perry of this parish and Harriet Cook of this parish were married by banns this sixth day of July in the year one thousand eight hundred and thirty three. Witnesses Robert Rickott and Maria Cook. Again, only signature was first witness

July 6 1844 George Stanford of full age, bachelor, ostler of Uphaven, father Thomas Stanford, labourer married Emma Cook, 19, spinster of Rushall, father James Cook, labourer. Witnesses Matthew Potter & Elizabeth Gregory. (Only second witness could sign)

25 March 1858 William Cook 23 bachelor, labourer of Rushall - father James Cook, Blacksmith married Jane Brown 25 spinster of Wilsford - father John Brown (can't read occupation, sorry). Witnesses James Davies & Mary Ann Cook. (All could sign)

29 July 1865 Joseph Early of full age, bachelor, labourer of Rushall - father James Early, labourer married Sarah Cook of full age, spinster of Rushall - father James Cook, labourer. Witnesses John Long & Mary Ann Cook (All could sign)

That's all I could find in the way of marriages at Rushall. I'll have a bit more of a look at the other registers I have and will let you know by PM if I find anything.

Good luck

Angela
