Does anyone have a Flory in their family tree ?
« on: Saturday 28 June 08 17:05 BST (UK) »

I have a bit of a dead end.....I have a Mary Flory who married Walter Bell on March 6, 1770 at Kirk Andrews upon Esk. I found four children for them....Mary, Anne, Edward and Richard.

The thing is that's all I can find about Mary. The name Flory doesn't seem to be very common in Cumberland.

There is also a Margaret Flory who married John Bell on April 17, 1770 at Kirk Andrews upon Esk...could be a relative?

Has anyone encountered the name Flory in their research?

Hi mab

I'm sure you've tried variants like Flora and Florence.  Sorry, you've said it's a surname!  In which case, my immediate reaction is, is it Scottish?

Apart from that, loads of people  in the se areas very close to the border had marriages in Scotland.  They were spread over the sparse area around the border and could be closer to a church in Scotland, they might have been marrying someone from Scotland, or be descendeed from the Scots.

At various times it was also easier to get married in Scotland, or they may have belonged to aThe Church of Scotland or some other denomination such that it was easier to go over the border.

Failing that,  this is pretty wild country and as industry became more centralised many people moved to towns.  Have you tried Carlisle, Longtown and Brmpton?

Failing that, therte's always Gretna Green?  Or emigration??!!

Best wishes

Probably of no help to you but when researching my surname Sloey I came across the name flory but it was obviously just through bad hearing or bad spelling lol

I found the marriage Emms but that's all I can find about her. The name seems more prevalent in the south of England rather than Cumberland  Undecided So, that's why I was asking....maybe someone has run across the name. Her daughter Anne Bell married David Tate in 1803 at Arthuret.

Thanks for your thoughts on the matter Cheesy

Hi Mab

Has it been possible to look at the chapelry of Nicholforest just by Kirkandrews on Esk?  I've used that and had bits of records missing.  Do I gather it's rellay just her burial you need?

Also, when I had this  problem, there was a mention of a chapel at Kirklinton Hall in a couple of places.  I never pinned it down though.

By the way, equally unhelpful, to you, but similar, to Poncho, my immediate reaction was seeim=ng it as a mis print for my elusive Hoeys!  On the other hand, with those squirly capitaql letters you can see the possibilities for Flory being indexed wrongly as well!!

Good searching.

Hi

This is part of the Longtown site.

I think it's the one someone's already given you.   I don't think it's a full list.

It might be worth an email though.
