Hi Pat and Pam -
In 1881 Mary is his wife, 12 years younger than John b. Sutton on Trent, Notts, so I guess this is not the same wife!
There is a death reg. Q2 1886 in Worksop district for Mary Ann Smith age 29.
There are two marriages for a John Smith in Worksop district between 1886 and 1891. The second one Q4 1889 has a Sarah Nicholls on the same page.
Possible scenario ?
amended 7/3 to give death reg. date !

Thanks to both of you for your help. I have only just started researching this branch - big setback 2 weeks ago when my Aunt found Grandma's birth certificate in some old papers, and I found that Great grandma's maiden name was Smith, and not Newton, the name I had been following. Some very believable coincidences had taken me up the Newton path! I'll see if I can find any links betwen this second marriage for John and the Newtons, but it probably was just a red herring. My Great Grandma was Eliza Smith, but by this cencus she was married to Joseph Allen and they were staying in Normanton, Wakefield. Anyway, you have both given me more information to work on, thanks again, Cheers, Pat.
