I have an ancestor that was listed as a school master in Wooton from 1851 to 1871 census - is it possible to locate the school or employment details?

Can you be a bit more specific. The only Woottons I know are not spelt quite the same as yours. Where 'tis?

Sorry, no this is the information I have - its the Dimmers living in Wooton

Any info greatly appreciated.

1851 Census
By this time Thomas had married Eliza Payne (Catherine Carter Paynes sister) who was born in Lamborne, Berks in 1822 and they had two children.
Rachel Jane Dimmer – born 1849 – Wootton, Wiltshire
Elizabeth Mary Dimmer – born 1850 – Wootton, Wiltshire
Thomas occ was a schoolmaster - Living in Wootton Street in the the registration district of Pewsey and sub registration district of Netheravon

1861 Census - They had more children:
Robert William Dimmer born in 1853 in Wootton Rivers, Wiltshire ref: Pewsey Wiltshire Vol 5a ref: 167
Sarah L Dimmer born in 1855 in Wootton Rivers, Wiltshire
Thomas is registered as a National Schoolmaster

1871 Census - In this census it appears they have another child
John F Dimmer – born in 1863 also in Wootton Rivers, Wilts
By this stage it appears that Robert and Elizabeth may have left home
Thomas is still registered as a school master, Rachel as an infant school mistress and Sarah as a pupil teacher – they are living in The Street, Wootton Rivers

Looking at Kelly's Directory of Wiltshire, 1867, the entry for Wootton Rivers has the following (page 379):

Parish Clerk: Thomas Dimmer
Post Office: Thomas Dimmer sub postmaster
National School; Thomas Dimmer, master

thank you, that directory is really interesting. I am being really dumb but is there a quick way to get to the page with Thomas on - I keep doing a search on the documetn and the only way appears to be page by page. It must be the same Thomas.

Use "find by keywords"

Select "Wiltshire"
Select "1860's"
Ignore the key name bit

Choose keywords "Dimmer w/2 school"
( That instruction just means: do a search for the word "Dimmer" occuring within two words of "school")

Click on "Find Directories"

That will bring up one result

Select that by clicking on "Directory", then ignore the first page that comes up - click on "next hit"
