Hi Jill,
That would be brilliant if you could have a look next time you get the chance.
I'm trying to find out about John Leech, born in Hodnet in 1796. I know his second marraige was to Elizabeth Millington born in hodnet 1806. I would like to know who his parents were and where they were from. Other than that anything you could find would be really helpful.
Thank you

Hi,
I finally managed to get to the RO this morning.
Elizabeth Millington was baptised in Hodnet March 19 1809 d/o Joseph & Mary of Marchamley.
I couldn't find Joseph & Mary's marriage in Hodnet. I see that there a few IGIs (of the 'submitted by a member' kind) placing the marriage in Hodnet in 1806, but I didn't see it.
There are 2 possible baptisms for John Leech:
1. John baptised Jan 23 1791 s/o Mary Leech of Hopton 2. John baptised Jan 27 1800 s/o Samuel & Sarah Leech of Hopton
Again, I couldn't find a marriage in Hodnet for Samuel & Sarah, but I notice there's a marriage on the IGI between Samuel Leech & Sarah Millington in 1813 (my fiche records stop in 1812) - could this be a late marriage, or just the eldest son 'keeping it in the family'?!
There's also a marriage in 1780 on the IGI for a Samuel Leech & Sarah Pailing in Stanton upon Hine Heath, whic I think is very near Hodnet.
Jill

Hi Jill,
Thanks for spending your time having a look through the records for me.
John Leech was born in 1796 so the 1800 baptism would probably be his...did parents usually leave it a few years before they got children baptised?
Stanton Upon Hine Heath is near to Hodnet as John and Elizabeth's children were born there.
How far back do most people get when finding out family tree's?
Thanks again

Hi,
I think at that time, children were mostly baptised within days but there were always exceptions + if you've estimated John's birthdate from a census entry, that could well be 'out' by a couple of years. So I think you've probably got the right one.
As for how far back do you get - it's a bit like 'how long is a piece of string'! A lot depends on how determined you are and also, of course, what records are still available for whatever areas you're researching - and whether you can get to them. That's why Rootschat is so great - lots of people happy to do look ups for each other!
Good luck,
Jill
