I haven't managed to trace the birth of my gt grandfather on the 1911 census for Cornwall it simply states Ireland Kerry.
Does anyone know where to begin?
I presume there were a lot of ferry points around Kerry in the 1850's judging by the coastline.

Original post stated John was born in 1852 Kerry Ireland son of John Ferris a ferryman (occupation) all data except the Kerry Ireland from his marriage certificate.

one place that I think may be worth considering for the ferry man occupation is Tarbert in North Kerry. Two ships listed as departing from here in Slater's of 1846 - one to Kirush in Clare and the other to Limerick (City). A ferry still runs from Tarbert to Killimer, Co. Clare.
A military tower and battery are also mentioned on Tarbert island.

Hello,
looking at the earlier censuses, he is never at home for the census but Emily is a Mariner's wife in 1881 (I think it was then.) Is this the right family? Yes that's them
There is this for the Royal Navy- wonder if it's him?
1871 RG10; Piece: 5783; Folio: 41; Page: 8 John Ferris Boy 1 Class single 17 yrs b Ireland HMS Nymphe - At Zanzibar That could well be him there's only 2 years difference in age it may be a mistake.
I am thinking that his job of Ferryman is in retirement from the Navy.
It was his father that was a ferryman
