Artist and Picture Restorer
« on: Friday 07 March 08 10:27 GMT (UK) »

HI,

I have John Wardell born c1798 in Middlesex, but spent most of his life in Hampshire, mainly Southampton.

On the 1851 census his occupation was artist and on the 1861 he was noted as artist and picture restorer.

Does anyone have access to any directories which would say if he had his own business, and if so would you be so kind as to have a look for me please?

In 1861 he was living at 5 Regent Street.

Thank you.

Jen.

thanks both, I can find no mention of him in the directories from those links, Regent street is mentioned in the street directories, but only 1,3, 4 and 7, no number 5!

Back to the drawing board then   Huh

Thanks,

I found him in one of the directories - 1853 I think, but living at Totton.  If you scroll down the home page for each directory you can search by name not the address.

Ive found him listed on the 1851 now thanks, as a portrait painter. It makes sense that he probably didn't have a  studio but I would imagine he went to residences to paint the portraits.

Ive also found two of his sons on the 1863 list, does anyone know what a flyman did? That is what his son Reuben was down as.

Have a look at this rooschat thread which explains what a flyman did:

So he was either a cabbie or a theatre hand, whichever he was he had a change in career as he too was an artist previous to this.
Thanks Bearkat. Smiley

I don't know if Totton had anything as exciting as a theatre.

In recent years it has been voted the most boring town in England. Undecided

I shouldn't laugh, but I find that rather funny. Lips Sealed Lips Sealed

By the time Reuben was a flyman, he was living at Lower canal walk, and I take it that this was in Southampton rather than Totton, I would imagine that Southampton had a theatre .

I supect that he was probably a cabbie though Wink

At least it makes a change from all the Ag Labs that I have in the family!  Grin
