Catherine McDermott emigration to Boston
« on: Friday 07 March 08 11:29 GMT (UK) »

I am searching for any info on my g/aunt Catherine McDermott.  She was born 1887 in Clonmany, Donegal, Ireland. Her parents were John McDermott / Annie O'Donnell. She emigrated in April 1910 to her aunt Ellen O'Donnell, 101 Smith ST, Roxbury Boston.  Ellen's parents were Edward O'Donnell/Catherine Canny also of Clonmany,Donegal. Ellen was born 1853. I cannot find anything on either of these women any help appreciated.

rossee,   I spent some time on this and I can't find anything on them either.    If they missed the 1910 census anything could have happened before 1920......likely they both married.

In 2006,  someone else was looking for O'Donnells at the exact same address

If you have any other clues/guesses about them in the U.S. ,  let us know and will try again.

Thank you Lissa, for helping me search for Catherine. That was my sister that was searching in 2006. Ellen O'Donnell [aunt] was Catherine's sponsor on the ships manifest. Ellen may have married but still used her maiden name. I do not know if she stayed in Boston. There is a Catherine McDermott age and emmigration year is correct in the 1920 Census in Kings,New York, We put a message on the genealogy board a few years back had no luck at all. Catherine travelled with Annie McColgan who was joining her husband Michael McColgan in Cambridge.

rossee,  this is toughie for sure!!

I looked at the Catherine McDermott in Brooklyn 1920.   She is a maid in the Litchenstein household where Georgiana age 43 (Head and Widow) is mother to a 37 yr old son and 2 daus (maybe twins) age 32.  One of the daus is also named Georgiana so not thinking she is really the step-mom!!!   Either something a bit off with this family or with the enumerator!

With such a common name, hard to be sure this is a possibility for your Catherine

Did Catherine and Ellen arrive in NY or Boston when they came over??  If Boston,  thinking not likely your Catherine.

Some MA marriages searchable on-line up to 1915 BUT they don't pair a Bride and Groom  ---   so not very helpful!

Any middle name for Catherine??

Catherine emmigrated on 9 April arriving on 19 April 1910, gives her birth year abt 1889, she was born  28 June or July 4 1887 not sure which one . She was my Grandfathers sister. She had 1 sister called Mary Ann born June 4 1882. I do not know if  Mary ann emigrated. I found Catherine on Ellis Island records sailing from Londonderry/Glasgow  going to Boston to her  aunt Ellen O'Donnell [her mother's sister]  was already in Boston.

Well, rossee,  I've looked and looked   ----  not finding Catherine as "McDermott" anywhere ---    NY, MA or points in between (CT, RI) or elsewhere.

Searched for Catherines b. in Ireland with a plus/minus on her birth year  and there are MANY!!
Looked for relationships where might see other known family members in the household and nothing obvious.  Not to say she isn't there and maybe someone will see her!!!

So until there is some lead on a possible marriage for her not sure where to go next.

SORRY!!   I you have any other inspiration, let us know.

Everybody has somebody (or many!) like this   Undecided

 Lissa

Thank you for your time and effort. I have looked again at the  "Furnessia"
ships manifest on Ellis Island records. The only other thing i can see is there is numbers written above her name=   1-289345-2/14/40

also underneath her name = 1-38300

I do not know if they relate to her or the person on the next line.

I think the first bunch of numbers you wrote refer to her and the next one refers to the other person.  This explains what the numbers mean:  http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/Manifests/occ/  Since the numbers start with 1, it means she was in either Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, or Clinton or Essex Co. New York as of 14 Feb 1940.  Doesn't narrow it down much, but at least that indicates she was still living then.
