Mabel C Farrant migration/census
« on: Friday 07 March 08 11:53 GMT (UK) »

Looking to find anything about Mabel Clementine Farrant b 1890 Suffolk, England, in USA, she died in Bournemouth, England 1976 but as a US citizen.  She left England after 1901 and her death is registered in New York for 1976 death in England, with a social security number.

thanks very much

Hi Kasby. There appears to be a slew of passenger records for her. Let me try to put them in some kind of order:

Arriving New York June 13, 1927 aboard the American Farmer, she is a shop assistant, born in Haverhill, visa issued in London April 7, 1927, last address London. Departure is London.

Arriving New York June 30, 1929 aboard the Carmenia, she's a clerk, a British citizen, visa issued in Washington on May 18, 1929, last residence New York. Here she might possibly be traveling with a Dorothy S Gumbrill, 35, who has a visa number one less than Mabel's and got it on the same day. Departure is Southhampton, England.

Dpearting and arriving NY, arrival on April 19, 1937 aboard the Empress of Australia, all the same info and Dorothy is also on this ship.

Departure New York, Nassau Bahamas and Havana Cuba, arriving back in NY on Oct 11, 1937 aboard the Carinthia. She is a clerk, still living in NY, and Dorothy is again on the same ship.

On to the 1930 census, Mabel lives alone in NYC, and next door is Dorothy. Mabel rents her home for $70 a month and she owns a radio. Says she came over in 1927 and is an alien. She is a clerk in a hotel. She is in the 12 Assembly district, but the edge is cut off, so I can't see what street.

I think that will do it for Ancestry. I'll have a bit more of a look.

ssdi.rootsweb.com
shows
Dorothy Gumbrill b. 25 Apr 1894, d. Jul 1978. She may also have died back in Europe.

http://www.footnote.com/
has some mentions of both Dorothy and Mabel's naturalization - interestingly, they both seem to have put in Declarations of Intention on April 15, 1932.

http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/ shows Dorothy Susan Gumbrill was back in the UK (3 August 1978. Page 71 of 76), died 14 Jul 1978, address Flat 12c, Exbourne Manor, 37 Christchurch Road, Bournemouth. Occupation Clerk (retired).

She also makes the following trips:
9 Aug 1926-Tuscania
24 Jul 1931_Aquitania
5 Aug 1932-Dutchess of Atoll
1 Jul 1933-Morro Casstle
25 Jul 1935-Washington

She mentions at one point that her English contact is her "Aunt" B. Woodcock, and her mother, Mrs B. Farrant.
Her first trip in 1926 is to St. Louis, via NY and Chicago.  She is going to a friend, R. Coleman, 21 North Maple Ave, St. Louis, MO.  In 1931 her middle name, Clementine is written in over the typed entry.  Her characteristics are: height: 5/5";
complexion: fair; hair: auburn; eyes: grey
