My GGGGG GF would have been a City fan....probably
|
I really would appreciate some assistance.
I have traced my GGGGG Grandfather as William Burford, baptised in Stroud, 16 Feb 1711. His father is shown as Benjamin Burford. This is where my problem starts. According to the IGI, there are 2 Benjamin Burfords married around that date:
30 Oct 1710 - Benjamin Burford m. Alice Burnet in the parish of Haresfield. 28 Apr 1712 - Benjamin Burford m. Alice Lawrence in the parish of Randwick.
As you can see, there are 2 Benjamin's marrying 2 Alice's. I have a copy of the original Haresfield entry which further complicate matters as it states "Benjamin Burford & Alice Burnet both of the parish of Randwick ...".
My request is this, It would be appreciated if someone could check if the entry in the Randwick register exists and if it is correct. I have visited the Gloucestershire Archives before but am unable to do so again until April.
Any advice as to how to unravel the problem with 2 Benjamin's marrying 2 Alice's would also be much appreciated.

I'll be in Gloucester RO next week and can look up the marriage entries you mention in both PRs, also see if there is any help in the names of the witnesses.
There is, of course, the possibility that there was only one Benjamin, and that he married twice in quick succession. It does happen, especially if a wife dies in childbirth and there is a young child to be looked after. I could also look for a burial of an Alice in 1711 which might indicate this.

Hi Gillg
Many thanks for your kind offer, I would appreciate it very much.
From my original message you will note I already have a photocopy of the Haresfield entry and there are no mention of witnesses. I would be grateful for any information you can find regarding the Randwick entry and the possibility of the death of Alice.
Once again, thank you for your offer.
Regards

Silly me of course there were no witnesses in 1710! Anyway, putting that gaffe hastily behind me, I will take a serious look for you next week.

Hi CB
Finally made it to the RO, and found the Haresfield marriage entry for Benjamin Burford and Alice Burnet as you said. Also looked for a possible death of Alice before 1712, but there was nothing at Haresfield.
Randwick proved to be a bit of a problem. The marriage register for the years 1692-1725 is not on fiche (wouldn't you know it?), and the Bishop's transcript for that period appears to show only Baptisms and Burials.
I note that both of these are members' submissions on the IGI. I really can't see where they would have got the information about the 1712 marriage to Alice Lawrence from, unless they laid their hands on that missing register.
Sorry I can't help more.
