Hawkers missing from census
« on: Friday 07 March 08 17:27 GMT (UK) »

Hi All,
Was it normal for travellers and hawkers to be missed from a census if they were camped in woods and on farm ground? I have only ever been able to find my Brown family on the 1901 census . This was in the parish of Lismore and Appin Scotland and they were recorded as residing in a tent. I have been unable to locate them on any other cencus.I know that they travelled the road north from Perth to Inverness regularly but no joy anywhere.

I think they often got missed. One of my ancestors (and his family) who was a hawker only appears on one census (1851).  Not sure if they deliberately avoided the enumerator or if he didn't bother to look very hard.

With regard to the 1841/51 cenus returns, it wasnt required for an enumerator to record people not actually living in houses. Some did, luckily enough, but many are those who were missed.

Later on it was required - so they should appear somewhere. However, being the folki they were, they often used aliases which makes them extremely hard to find (if not impossible). Some simply refused to give names, and the enumerator recorded them as unknown gypsies/travellers/tramps/vagrants with approximate ages.

My 3x great grandad Gray never made it onto a census return that Ive found, because he died in 1869 - his widow made her first appearance with the rest of the family in 1871.

Hints for searching include trying to find one of the children or the wife, especially if they had unusual forenames, along with a wildcard search (an asterisk) if using Ancestry to search them. For instance you could do a search for Brown* which would include Browne or even Browning. Ive found several families using the above methods. Good luck!!

Thanks Carolyn and An65 for the info. I have searched for wife and children for this bunch and have never been able to find them .I only found them on the 1901 census when I was looking for my Robson side who married a daughter. I was surprised when I found them all and another large travelling family called Johnstone all camped in a field.I will try using variants and see if that helps. The travelling side of my family didnt make life very easy for me thats for sure!
