Norfolk or Suffolk help please
« on: Friday 07 March 08 17:35 GMT (UK) »

Can any one help me please  Smiley . I have found my ancestors on the 1841 census and the place of birth is down as Mildenhall Suffolk. When I looked for them on IGI I found them but the place of birth was Wiggenhall Norfolk.  Shocked . Now I may have got two different families but the names and dates of birth match. When I looked on the vision of Britain 19th century map for Milldenhall it sits right on the red line, which I presume was the border between Norfolk and Suffolk.  Huh Can anyone enlighten me please.

yours hopfully

1861 Census

Thomas Griggs    Head     72     Mildenhall Suffolk
Elizabeth Griggs  Wife      50     Mildenhall Suffolk
Thomas Griggs     Son      16     Mildenhall Suffolk
James Griggs       Son      13     Mildenhall Suffolk
Robert Griggs      Son         9    Mildenhall Suffolk

1851 Census

Thomas Griggs    Head     59     Mildenhall Suffolk
Elizabeth Griggs  Wife      40     Mildenhall Suffolk
Mark Griggs          Son      12     Mildenhall Suffolk
Thomas Griggs     Son       6      Mildenhall Suffolk
James Griggs       Son        5     Mildenhall Suffolk

1841 Census Parish of Wiggenhall Mary magdalen

Thomas Griggs        50
Elizabeth Griggs      35
Elizabeth Griggs       10
Frances Griggs          8
Harriet Griggs           5
Thomas Griggs          1

I know that the ages vary a little, but on each census there is a vast difference between Thomas and Elizabeth's ages, and in my experience they weren't very worried about what age they entered onto the census records.

heres hoping

Thanks Blue-Spirit

Mmmm, don't know about the first marriage to Mary Bonnett, but the second one to Elizabeth Jaggard looks like a possibility.

Where did you find the information. I looked on IGI and couldn't find it.

The info comes from the Norfolk marriages  CD 1801-1837....

I found the below on the 1851. which makes Thomas below bn 1891.
Thomas  GRIGGS      60      Magdalen-Nfk
Elizebeth  GRIGGS      47,School Mistress   Bully Green-Cam
Sarah A.  GRIGGS      8      Scholar   Magdalen-Nfk
Downham
Census Place , Wiggenhall St Mary Magdalen Downham.

You might want to ask on  the Suffolk board.... But remember Downham is Norfolk.

This is a longshot but in 1841 there is a family in Mildenhall with a 2yr old Mark and headed by an Elizabeth.
HO107/1027/14, Folio 41, Page 15. The name looks like Matin.

Do you have a marriage for the Griggs as I can't find one on the Suffolk Marriage Index.

If not could the above be the family you are looking for and the said Elizabeth set up home with Mr. Griggs but never actually married him.

Just a thought.

Could explain the age gap between Mark and the younger children.

Many thanks Suffolk Sue.

I did see the marriage in 1844 to Elizabeth Turner  Shocked  Infact that was the only marriage I found of a Thomas Griggs in Mildenhall and it would fit in with your theory regarding Mark being Elizabeth's son to a previous partnership, and also the birth date of son Thomas 1845.

On the 1851 census Thomas and Elizabeth are living next door to a William Turner (might be a coincidence). What do you think  Huh
