Thanks Cathy,
That's right, they were mostly farmers, & quite religious: one started Methodism in Wilstead. Sadly, one of the direct descendants of that  branch who I was in regular contact with died recently in Canada. His ancestor George lived in the Goldington Green area alongside some five or six of my ancestors.
Best wishes,
Bob

Bob

I live in Wilstead and there is a small road in an estate in Wilstead called Armstrong Close - and although I have lived here all my life am not sure why?

Methodism is thriving in Wilstead - they have a lovely church and church hall ...but as they do not apply for an alcohol licence it is under-used!

I will look up the graves for the ARMSTRONGs and let you know as I think they are quite prominent graves

Cathy,

It would be great to have info on Armstrong graves in Wilstead!

There are several of us with Armstrong forbears who descend from one branch or other of the family.  They appear to have originated in Riseley, with a couple named John and Sarah Armstrong. John and Sarah had just one surviving son, William, who moved from Riseley to Wilstead at some point between 1729 and 1734.

William also married a Sarah (possibly Sarah Prudden, but not proven), and their two recorded sons John and Thomas were born in Riseley in 1729 and Wilstead in 1734 respectively.

William's younger son, Thomas, married Christian Fiddes in 1766, and was the father of the William Armstrong who married Mary Warren in 1799 and founded Methodism in Wilstead in the early 1800's. There is apparently a commemorative tablet to William and Mary in the entrance hallway of the modern chapel. This was the "comfortable" branch of the family, who were farmers.

The elder son, John, moved on from Wilstead, and he and his wife Edith died in Maulden (both in their early forties), leaving two known sons William and John Jnr who moved to Cople and Ravensden respectively. John and Edith seem to have been poor as church mice - William was apprenticed by the Maulden Overseers of the Poor to a cordwainer in Cople. It's not known how John Jnr got to Ravensden, but he too may have been "placed" by the Overseers, as he was only 13 when his father died.  Certainly, he and his wife (yet another Sarah!) were poor in Ravensden - they appear several times in the notebooks of the Ravensden Overseers.

A lot of the above is circumstantial, based on baptisms and burials - so any Armstrong graves in Wilstead would be good solid proof!

Many thanks for your offer

Wendy

Hello All,
DNA tests between various Armstrongs now shows positive connections between the Riseley, Cople, Wilstead Ravensden & Thurleigh Armstrongs, plus others.
The Upper Gravenhurst Armstrongs SEEM to fit in with the above,  but we need conclusive proof.

Hello All,
Have just received a copy of the death cert for Elizabeth Armstrong. It reads:
Died 24th Nov 1874 Eaton Socon. 82 years of age. Widow of John Armstrong (Farm labourer) Elizabeth Smith was present at death.

The informant, Elizabeth Smith, may have been connected to the family of Joseph Smith who wed a Sarah Armstrong in 1875 St Neots district.
