hello . hope am posting on the correct site , am aware could be moved .have been doing the family tree, done very well . as can be expected with a surname like mine . smith , any way .with help from the wonderful site . and the people who are always there for you.have done very well.any-way.started on grandfather smith.when fred who is 91.sent me a newspaper cutting .called past times. on it was a troop of soldiers .preparing to go to france in the first world war.circled on the third row . was my grandfather.was amazed, had no idea .grandfather had fought in this terrible conflict..so had to find out about him .trouble was.know-one alive to tell.me any-thing .only fred. and fred states did not know is service number,only.that he was badly wounded.and would not talk about the war.well there must have been a few smiths in this war. how was i to find him.nothing for it .but to put a appeal out on the web . this i did . and ady can to my aid.he even found his war documents. and e-mailed them to me.sadly was unable to state where held prisoner in germany.has grandfather did not tell any-one.so i tried contacting the red cross in geneva.if a member of family or close kin would help. armed with a service number at last. with ady help.sent off the e-mail. three months later, a very nice reply. smith.thomas edward. birth 30.8.1894. place of birth .selby. rank .private. serice number 201082. place of internment. prisoner of war.in german hands .present in the camp. of mannheim. according to a list dated 27.8.1918. source .one list from the geman records. would any one have any information.on this camp. mike
