Hi There,
Thanks so much for the extremely interesting link. I will have a good look through it as I am sure it will be most helpful.
I found the following info on the IGI and think that this might possibly be my John's Christening record as well as that of a brother:-
JOHN SYKES Christening: 15 MAY 1791 High Street Presbyterian, Stockport, Cheshire, Father: WILLIAM SYKES Mother: MARY
WILLIAM SYKES Christening: 02 JUN 1793 High Street Presbyterian, Stockport, Cheshire, Father: WILLIAM SYKES Family Mother: MARY
Unfortunately I have turned up yet another Mary with no maiden name!!! Why were our ancestors not more imaginative when it came to naming their children? Would the parish registers for that period list the mother's maiden name or is that just wishful thinking?
Regards,
Yvonne

Hi Pat and Jean,
Just a quick note to let you know that I am STILL waiting for the will for John Sykes. I swear, I have worn a path in the pavement outside the Post Office.
Am holding thumbs for tomorrow and will keep you posted.
Regards,
Yvonne

Hi Yvonne,
Did the post man call today or are you still holding thumbs? I too am waiting for a couple of wills to arrive so know exactly how you feel. I’ll be going to the library at the weekend and can find the details of the baptisms for you. It’s very unlikely that the mother’s maiden name will be on them but it will give you the father’s occupation and probably where they lived at the time. I was thinking about the marriage of John Sykes and Mary and know that Jean found you the Bardsley one in 1837. Have you tried a message on the “Cheshire Marriages pre 1837” board? There may be a marriage around 1820 in the Stockport area.
Regards, Pat

Hi Pat,
Nope, no postman .... think he has died and gone to heaven! And taken my wills with him worst luck.
Pat, you're a star, I would be sooo very grateful if you could look up the records for me .... when ever you have the time. Even if the mother's maiden name does not appear, they will be most welcome. I have this feeling that John's mother might have come from Yorkshire, don't ask me why ........ just a hunch!
Thanks again,
Yvonne.
PS will try the pre 1837 marriages board, thanks I did not even know that it existed.

Hi Yvonne,
I've had a look at the baptisms for both John and William Sykes. unfortunatley there is nothing on them to add to the information you already have.
Regards, Pat.

Hi Pat,
Thanks so much for your trouble. What a pity maiden names and occupations aren't always mentioned.
The wills arrived yesterday and although John's will was five pages long, it was unfortunately not of much help. It did, however, mention a son William, (I only had two children George and Mary Ann) so it now appears that John's father, brother and son all shared the same name. George named his first son William as well. He nominated his son George and a Ralph Smith (licensed victualler of Birkenhead) as Executors but I have no idea whether or not Ralph Smith is related in any way. It also mentions freehold properties in Chester and Oliver Streets - and at the time Mary Ann and her husband John Alcock were resident at the Chester Street property.
The second will for Thomas Smith - Market Gardener of Christleton, Boughton was also rather disappointing as it only mentioned four of his eight children. I was hoping for confirmation of his daughter Mary Smith (m. Wynne) because I cannot find her Christening record but no such luck. It mentioned an uncle William Titherington whom at this stage I cannot connect. Nevertheless they made interesting reading and I am glad to have them.
So now R120 lighter in the pocket I am still none the wiser as to who or where John Sykes married.
Once again many thanks for all your help and interest.
Regards,
Yvonne

Hi Yvonne, Thanks for letting us know about the wills. It's a shame that they haven't taken you any further forward. I will keep a look out for John and Mary in the various Stockport registers. You never know, something might turn up. Good Luck, Regards, Pat.
