Channelkirk - Abernethy
« on: Saturday 08 March 08 11:18 GMT (UK) »

Am looking for a James Nathaniel Abernethy, shown in 1901 as Navvy living at "Huts" (Railway), Channelkirk  age 30.
He was born in Lanark and was supposedly residing at Biggar (Master Butcher) in 1900 whilst his wife was at Sprouston giving birth.

Have so far not found his death anywhere in the "scotlandspeople" or "FreeBMD".
Does anyone have a record of any death at Channelkirk or any accident there round the 1901 time.

His wife's death is recorded at Biggar in 1923, which is all the more puzzling.

Any help appreciated.

Hi Becky

If he was born c. 1871 his birth record should be on the IGI.  I thought I would look there to find his mother's name as that may help to find the death record, but I don't see a birth with his middle name. The closest would be a birth in 1868 (no middle name). Do you have the name of his parents?

Do you know he died c. 1901? FreeBDM is English/Wales records - do you think he may have died in England. Was he listed as deceased on his wife's death certificate? Sorry to ask so many questions, may help to find him.

Hi,
Thanks for reply, have all the relevant information on James Nathaniel Abernethy, born 1868 Lanark, the only thing that I can't find is his death for some reason.

If the 1901 census is correct, then why is he a Navvy and his wife and children were living with her parents in 1901 at Greenhead, Sprouston and she was still shown as married ?

Other "Rootschatters" have been looking at the problem for me at Lanark and all we can surmise is that he may have died before 1906 at Biggar, the 1901 census may be wrong and he slipped through the net.

His wife's death cert in Biggar shows him as dec. and still a Master Butcher, it is all very puzzling.
