No it's not - there was a thread about it a while ago. MarieC uses it although a different server for her website and her counter has stopped. I've always used:
http://www.statcounter.com/
You get some good stats with this site as well.

PS Has anyone got any experience of geocities - 15MG free with a BT ISP?

I would really like to keep my website with rootschat but have been looking at other free webhosts as a backup.
Don't know aobut BT ISP but I did once have a website free with my ISP, found it very inflexible and it had pop up ads. Of course this was a few years ago and things may be different now but check it out carefully.
BTW does anyone know how to work out the size of current website. All these hosts offer different sizes and I need to try and find out what I need. I have no idea

If you've saved your site for local use (as webpages), you should be able to find out how big it is by highlighting the folder in explorer (if you ahve Windows, that is)?
I've taken the plunge with 110mb - just uploaded my site (as held on rootschat) onto there. I'll report problems back!
PS Has anyone got any experience of geocities - 15MG free with a BT ISP?
Sorrry, can't help you there. On ad-splattered ISP sites, mine with Plus.net is equivalent to rootschat - no rubbish popping up.

Hi Julian
Ok, of course, that's how to find how big my site is, how obvious!!! Incidentally it's not as big as I thought. Good.
Let us know how it goes with 110mb - you can be the guinea pig

That is what I use as you do get some really good stats and can quite easily see what pages people are viewing, how long they are on your site and where in the world they are from. I use hte free version although there is a paid one as well. With the free one you can set up weekly email reports if you wants which detail that information.

This may be just me but the WebSite I had up on RC used PHPGedView. It doesn't seem to work on 110mb. This may be just me. If I crack it I'll let you know but I suspect you have to upgrade to get access to a database and this is a requirement for PHPGedView.

Been looking at Geocities and it had ads - tastefully geared to the subject matter of your site
Best option at the moment is to create another sub-domain on my 1and1 space.

As I said, I've taken the plunge with 110MB (even changed my profile on here to show the link to it).
Of course there are problem-ettes. I had numerous references to rootshat webspace on my site, and I think I've found them and updated them.
I have found that my google maps don't work - I anticipate I told them which site I was using them on and google doesn't recognise the new location. So that's something to investigate (but not absolutely critical).
I have no idea (until I get some hits from someone else) whether my stats will work - I use both statcounter and google analytics, so maybe they will and maybe they won't - we'll have to wait and see .
What is more problematic is marketing the site. Regulars on this board will know I set out a campaign for getting your RC website noticed. Do I register with google with this new site? What about Cyndi's list and others? Something to chew on (and listen to advice about)

Guys,
I've moved this into Quaratine and back as I'm concerned at the level of free advertising other hosts will be given.
I've put it back for now as I understand everyone's frustration but please be limited in your advertising.
Before you cut your losses let's get an update from T&S.
Thanks, Pam

Thanks for your explanation (about the quarantine). I thought there was something wrong with my pc when it said it was out of bounds when I tried to post.
A fair point about not throwing the baby out with the bathwater. I am very much hoping RC webspace will be back with us; not least there is an undeniable cachet with having a rootschat.net website address.
I find myself in a difficult situation. MY RC FH site is an integral part of my research approach - in particular in terms of linking up with people with overlapping research interests. One of the reasons for building my site was that I didn't then need to open up my tree to people on Genes Reunited - instead I can refer them to my site which is (a) more informative and (b) harder work to copy
So I need another host (even if only temporarily) and I would hope Rootschat would indulge us by allowing myself and others in a similar situation to compare experiences and learn lessons from each other about exploring out there in the jungle setting up new sites (even if only on a temporary basis) .
