I'm still holding back moving for a while. As Julian has outlined, there are so many changes to make to various web pages, statscounter, etc. that it seems a lot of work for a temporary solution especially when one's time is precious. I think I'd rather use the time to write some more stories for it.

I still want my site to remain on Rootschat so will hold back for a bit longer.

No it's not - there was a thread about it a while ago. MarieC uses it although a different server for her website and her counter has stopped. I've always used:

http://www.statcounter.com/

You get some good stats with this site as well.

Gadget

It looks as though my hits are being recorded by statcounter - someone has accessed my temporary 110MB site from this thread [thank you  Wink], and this has shown up on my statcounter recent visitors log.  Looks like my google analytics is returning data too.

I used a rootschat counter, so don't know if the statcounter "counter" works - I must admit I don't want the fag of changing the code as I anticipate (hope?) this 110MB site is only going to be temporary

Well I'm going to hold fire, sit back and watch your experiences and as Gadget says use the time to write some more stories and wait for an update from T&S before I make any decisions. But it is interesting to hear of experiences of websites outside the RC experience.

It's perhaps time to get back to putting our energies into our research and sharing. Which is what I am sure most of us are all about.  The discussions on this page have however been very useful.

Perhaps after the storm everything in the garden will be lovely.

The main names that I am researching into at the moment are Cadman,(originating from Bulkington, Warwickshire), Smedley, (Leicestershire and Derbyshire), Paynes (Leicestershire, Yorkshire and Derbyshire) and Udall - you will also find several other names on my web page. I look forward to E-Mails from anyone who would like to share or talk about our family history.

I've used FreeWebs.com for quite a few years. Have five Sites with them.  50MB

Hardly any adverts on your pages except their one line name.

I also use  .50megs.com. Been with them six yrs. Hardly any Adds. 50MBs

No problems at all and FREE.

Geocities is OK but too many adds and limited space.

Bravepages too many adds but lots of space.

Rootschat has been very good.

Several of the free sites I have used in the past have now changed and stopped offering free space, or slapped on giant ads.  I used to use freewebs at one point, but if I remember correctly, I think they had a limit of 50 files.

I currently use NearlyFreeSpeech.  It's different to most places.  Most charge monthly, and if you don't use a lot of it, it all goes to waste.  Think of it like a Pay as you Go website: You pay for the space you use, and the bandwidth that your viewers use.  I set it up as a parallel site for my family history.  I haven't actually opened it for viewing, but may have to.  However I'd rather not have to change at all.  Rootschat is great, but soon people will start wondering where my site has gone.

At the risk of sounding ungrateful, I think it is time we had some answers about the Rootschat space..

This issue has been going on for months; new servers delivered; delivered again etc. But stil no news from those in the know!

All those who have done the research and published their sites on the RC free space did so in good faith and had every reasonable expectation that their hard work would be available for visitors.  Problems can occur, but to keep going on for months... I don't think so! What is worse is the lack of communication, which amounts to a lack of respect for the community here.

Where are our moderators who can answer the questions definitively?

If there is to be no more free space please tell us so that we can make alternative arrangements!

As I said in another thread, our web sites are perhaps the biggest resource available to researchers anywhere, Rootschat is about making resources available to all; and the effect of this mess is to deny access to a large amount of information.

Sorry to be blunt but it seems time someone started to thump the table.

Martin

I don't think you could have read the other thread fully!

Read the last two messages:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,289043.0.html

Thumping tables doesn't do anyone any good.

I think the mods have clearly explained they do not know the answer.

This site is free, and given in the spirit of goodwill by two individuals who do the best they can.

Sorry to disagree, but I don't think we can thump the table and make demands for the free service.

It is clear there are some problems, and this thread is suggesting alternatives. You can choose to pay for a service (where you may indeed make demands), or wait to see what transpires.

It is unusual to be kept in the dark, and my only emotion is deep concern - I hope all is well the our hosts.

Please let me clarify.

I have no axe to grind in that my site is on a paid host, where i have entire control and no ads. I also respect the Mods who have been doing their best to keep everyone informed. Their job is onerous and they do it extremely well.

That said, someone must know where the buck stops, and be able (if necessary using old fashioned telephones) to contact those responsible for the famous servers and find out if they are in need of help etc. I am sure everyone simply wishes to be kept aware so that their hard work can go back on line.

As in any organisation, communication is key
