I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction for seeking out any information regarding Stone Mason's in and around Falmouth in the C18th and C19th.
The family I am seeking information on appear to have this skill running through the generations. Francis Barnicoat his son Francis and finally John. John died in Mulberry Square in Falmouth in 1868 and he together with father Francis (B1795) and his grandfather Francis (b 1754) were noted as stone masons in census records and on BMD's. I have tried to find info under their surname but without success thinking they would be "self employed".
Could I look elsewhere? Any pointers would be appreciated.

Hi, i would suggest looking at the historical directories for that period for that time and the stone masons will be listed then search A2A or Cornwall RO (& the Cornish Centre) to see if they hold the records of the ledgers / log books etc for the stone masons i know (thanks to Chrisin1066land) that Sussex RO (where i am) hold 98 volumes of books for the stone masons of Lewes, in Sussex, they didn't just do Lewes though they did other areas of Sussex and presumabley the same goes for Cornwall.
sometimes carpenters would be the ones to do the engraving on headstones if that is what you are after. so dont only look under stone masons look under carpenters.

On Joan's wonderful stonemason site (if you don't already know it) there are lots of your surname http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~stonemen/BAB-BAV.htm
Cornwall GEnuki has a lot of background info/links to mines/quarries etc http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Cornwall/#Occupations
Have you searched the directories as Toni has mentioned they are at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Cornwall/#Directories, suggest town then its easy enough to look for names. Falmouth genuki has some direct links to some of these: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Cornwall/Falmouth/index.html
Just searching the 1892 one and there are 21 hits: a dressmaker Wm J Barnicoat at Polwhaverral Terrace. If you are lucky in some you may find some adverts, not just street addresses
So worth going for a look Bye Althea

Many thanks for the replies
Well the stonemen site does cite the census details i hold but there are some familiar addresses there with UNfamiliar names - so that was a good find for me on my behalf Althea!
I have had a look at directories and found a couple of entries that are useful
Looks like a have a trawl on my hands....
....thanks again
