Would somebody help me with the geography of Nottinghamshire, for example the census will show Gainsborough in Notts and sometimes Lincs it is getting confusing. Thank you in anticipation

Hi matron123 Smiley

Not quite sure what you mean - as far as I can see Gainsborough is Lincs throughout the censuses?

The site I find best for questions like these is Genuki

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/

You can use their search engine to search for an individual place and information on it, including maps and what civil registration district it comes under.

It's definitely worth taking time to explore - I find it invaluable.

The Civil parish of Gainsborough which was used for BMD registrations and for the main census area spans the boundary between Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.

This must not be confused with the town of Gainsborough nor the Church parish both of which are in Lincolnshire.
