Poplar ?
« on: Monday 10 March 08 11:11 GMT (UK) »

Hi,

I have just received a birth certificate for John William Goodacre, born 16th March 1858, registered Nottingham, St. Mary's. His place of birth, and is named as Poplar which I assume is an area of Nottingham but I have no idea where it might be.

Can anyone enlighten me please?

Thanks,

Jen

Might it have been Poplar Street? This article mentions St Mary's towards the bottom of the page:

http://www.nottshistory.org.uk/articles/tts/tts1926/itinerary1926p11.htm

Genuki don't mention Poplar as a town or parish.

Now if I had been less hasty and bothered to check the 1861 census before turning to Rootschat, I needn't have troubled you. I need more coffee!

Thanks very much,

Very warm, I should say, though having just had a look at Poplar Street on Multimap, it would seem that the Square has fallen prey to development. Don't suppose anyone has an old map of the area?

Being the sort of person who likes nothing better than to be trawling through old documents in search of long lost ancestors, a magnifying glass is something which I always have near to hand. Sadly, nowhere near strong enough for this one though.

The map looks as if it is exactly what I need but suspect I need to get my bird watching binoculars to be able to read it!
It's not very important at the moment and I'm sure I shall be able to find something next time I am working in Nottingham.

Thanks for all your help.

Jen if you log on to www.streetmap.co.uk and enter 'Poplar Street',and scroll down to the one in Nottingham, you will see that it is still there today.

Wonder if it's the same one as in 1861  Roll Eyes

Hi,

I found Poplar Street on Multimap, it is Poplar Square which seems to have disappeared. Probably under a car park or office block now!

Thanks anyway.
