one of us is getting confused here
you said he had sisters hestor and catherine
you then said catherine died in 1886
but on your original post you asked for a look up on the 1891 census for catherine
i supplied that census she was visiting at her sisters house
so she could not have died in 1886 or did you mean to say she died in 1896?

i was hoping that on some of the censuses he would be with some relations but as you can see no such luck
i think the 1851 census posted is a very strong probability that that is him
but as for the 1861 and 1871 i am not sure.
will have a look for the marriage between edward and ann
then if i find it you will have the option as to whether you send for the marr.cert.
that should then tell you who the father was and his occupation.

Thank you Wozzle,
      The James & Catherine who died in 1876 & 1886 were Edward's parents, sorry I didn't make that clear. I'd looked for Edward & Ann's  marriage also with no luck.
    The fact that Edward & Ann are in the High St., seems to make them a likely couple but they could also be some sort of cousins to my Edward as they seem to consistently call themselves Cox rather than Cocks. I know you can't rely on spelling & frequently tell people to ignore spelling but as the shop names would have been above the door & these people were probably quite educated this somehow seems significant.
    Many thanks for your help.
