Hi, is anyone else out there researching the Burgoyne family of Kilburn?
I have taken it back to my 4 x Gt grandfather William c1801 who married ElizabethI would love to find out more, maybe going back further, possibly find out what Elizabeth's maiden name was, and maybe get help me with marriages of the females in the family.
From what I have found out, the family seemed to stay in and around Kilburn through the generations, up to my Great Grandparents who ended up in South Yorkshire.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jen.

I have an Elizabeth Johnson b.c. 1791 h married into my family She was the daughter of Thomas johnson who married jenny Burgoyne
jenny Burgoyne was baptised in Smalley in 1764 -the daughter of Joseph and Jane (nee Stone)
Kilburn and Smalley are not that far apart - in Smalley parish registers some of Jennys siblings are recorded as Burgin -so it may be worth searching for William under that name too

There is a William Burgoyne c.1800 in Kilburn (Kilbourne) but he was married to Elizabeth can you give details of where you found William b kilburn married to Ann?

There is on IGI (extracted) a marriage William Burgan Hannah Marsden 10 Jun 1821 Sanda magnal Yorks
(Ann is often entered as hannah)
I think this is possibly the marriage of William and Ann frm 1851 census -as Ann was b Sandal magna

Hi Suz,
I've just realised that I put Ann instead of Elizabeth on my first message when I read your replies, where Ann came from I have no idea, as I don't have an Ann on my Burgoyne side.
I will change my initial message, its these dead folk getting me all muddled!!
I will have a look at the families that you mentioned and see if there is a connection, although I think I need to see if someone is able to look at the parish records for me to find out who William's parents were.
Looking at the dates you have for Jenny Burgoyne, if it is the same family she may have been an Aunt.
Thanks for the advice about checking the spellings, Ive looked at it being spelt with an I rather than a Y but haven't looked at Burgin.
Thanks again, and sorry for posting the wrong info - senior moment from one not yet senior!!!

it seems your William wasn't born in Kilburn but Alfreton Derbys and Elizabeth was b greenhill lane Derbys -there children were b Kilburn maybe Eliabeth was second wife as there is quite a gap n children
Also you could send for birth cert of one of younger children which would give mother's maiden name
Do you want 1841-1861 census with William and Elizabeth on?

i think the name was just written as it was heard -but the further back you go the more it is written as Burgoyne -so that is probably the original name
The problem that causes is, as a large percentage of the working classes couldn't read at that time, there name was often taken from a baptism record and then you get branches of the family using a different name.e.g. Burgin/Burgan
I have in my family a Thornhill -who married twice - first name written as Thornhill -second name written a Thornilley -his first lot of children used the name Thornhill -the second lot somewhere along the line wrote it as Thornley -and their branch still use that name today
