Hill Farm, PINHOE ???? (1862)
« on: Monday 10 March 08 20:40 GMT (UK) »

Hello

I have obtained a BC for my GG Grandmother ELLEN STONE.  She was born illigitimately to EMMA STONE in 1862, at Hill Farm, Pinhoe.

Emma was not at Hill Farm on the 1861 census, and I wondered if this would be somewhere that "single women" went to have their children?? Roll Eyes  Shocked

This one was lucky, and her mother married 2 years later, and the child was raised as his own. Cheesy

She was 17 on the 1861 census, but wouldn't have been pregnant, as the child wasn't born until May 1862 ..... and I know I will never find out who the father of the baby was .... Angry

Any advice on HILL FARM, PINHOE would be a great help! Undecided

Thank You Kiss Kiss

Hi

Hill farm is near the top of Cheynegate Lane in Pinhoe, about 10 minutes walk from me.  On the 1861 census route, Hill lies between Old Park on one side and Parsonage House, leading on to Beacon House, Beacon Cottage, Furze Close Cottage, Chenegate Cottages and Rixlade.

You can see it on Google earth and if you go to http://www.exeter.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=5614, you can zoom out and then follow Cheynegate lane up and find it on the left hand side.  It's called Hilltop now.

PS. Just out of interest, do you know where Emma was born and the name of the chap she married?

According to the census returns, she was born in Cheritan Fitzpaine c: 1842 (I haven't got that BC yet .... thought I had  Lips Sealed.  She married George Webber, and he was born in Heavitree.  I know George's Father was from Morchard Bishop.  Cheesy

Hi

I think your Emmas BC ref is Crediton Dec 1843 10 78

On the census,  is your Emma the one with William and Eliza in 1851 at Marsh Cottage, Cheriton Fitzpaine?

Some of my rellies came from C Fitz and Morchard Bishop too.

Yep, that's her  Wink

I don't know which Eliza(beth) her Mother would be though ... I checked the possible marriage entries - there are a possible FOUR! hmmmm  Huh Huh

On the 1861 census, Emma is living with a Jane Weeks, NEE STONE.  The YOB would put that close o ther fathers, so I am guessing she would have been her Aunt (Father's Sister) .. bit of Sherlock work there !!  Grin

Emma also then had a Sister Jane too .....

If you do me a list of names and dates for the family, I will have a look at CFitz registers next time I'm in the Record Office if you would like.
