Hi natae,

In 1851 census Richard is a lodger, but here's the family in 1841 possibly, it would help if you gave all the occupations of both fathers and Richard junior from the marriage cert to help confirm:

1841 HO107/448/13 fol.40 p.7
Farm House, Ramsey, Huntingdonshire
BROWNING
Richard 50 Ag Lab
Jno.      25     "
Rich.     20
David   15 Lab
Job      14    "
Sarah   45
Sarah   12
Caroline 6
/
Thos Wite 25 Ag. Lab
Jno. Ganner 26   "
//
all born in county

I wondered if that was why I couldn't find them in 1861 - I was hoping 1861 would give place of birth for them both so I could find Mary  Smiley

I think Mary was a servant in 1851, not with her family, as you may realise, Smith not the rarest name to look for!

Will look for Joseph just to make sure she's not at home, but she may not have been born in Ramsey.

A possible Joseph Smith in Ramsey, Richard & Mary's childrens' names may give you a clue if they named them after siblings or parents:

HO107/448/13/ Fol.41 P.8.
Middlemore Fen, Ramsey  (next page on from the Brownings)
SMITH
Joseph 45 Ag. Lab
Ann      45
Mary     10
/
Ann HADDON 2
//
all born in county

I know this Mary seems a little young  though

Probably same family in 1851

1851 HO107/1748  Fol.36  P.10
Middlemore, Ramsey
Joseph SMITH head Wid 53 Farm Labour  Bury Hunts
Wm. PAPWORTH visitor m 34  "         "      Ramsey
Mary     "                 "          4                          "
William  "                "           4months             "
Ann HADDON          "         14                         "
Ann PAPWORTH      "     m 28                         "

1851 HO107/1748  Fol.55  P.17
Dainbie House, Ramsey
in household of Sands Newton, farmer
Mary Smith servant s 20  Ramsey

Richard Browning married Sarah Day in 1814 at Ramsey, Hunts (per Hunts Marriage Index). You need to check the register to see who the witnesses were to see if they provide any clues.

A Sarah Day was baptised in Kings Ripton on 1 Dec 1793, daughter of William and Keziah, which fits perfectly with the 1851 census. Unfortunately there's also a burial of Sarah Day in Kings Ripton on 7 Feb 1795 - it will need reference to the parish register to see if it states daughter of William & Keziah, as no age is given. William & Kezia were the only Day couple baptising children in Kings Ripton, and they baptised 8 children between 1786 and 1804, but there wasn't another Sarah after 1795.

William Day married Kezia Bass in Kings Ripton 1786, but you need to establish first that these were actually the parents of Sarah, wife of Richard Browning senior

Various options. You could

- hope that someone who reads this thread has the transcript of Ramsey parish register
produced by Huntingdonshire Family History Society and comes up with the information
- post a specific request on this board with the Subject "Ramsey parish register look up"
- buy the fiche from Hunts FHS at http://www.huntsfhs.org.uk/Publications/Fiche-8.html
- contact Huntingdon records office to see if they can check the parish register - they may
  require a fee. See
  http://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/leisure/archives/visiting/crohuntingdon.htm
