does anyone have any information on the Sproston Family who lived on St Brides Road in the 1950's
Bernard Sproston was my grandad, he died of Dropsey at the age of 26 ,leaving behind his wife Agnes daughter Maureen and son Ken. Agnes was 9 months pregnant with my mum at the time of his death.
Mum never knew her dad obviously and there has been little to no mention of him or his side of the family. Last Saturday I managed to track down his burial plot in Cemetry, it was emotional to finally have soem connection with my Grandad.
There was no head stone so thats next on the list. If anyone has any stories of them good or bad id love to hear, also of course any photos we have none and mum has never seen her Dad.
We knew he had a sister called Gewn, and a theres roumer to be a brother called William.(may have died at 1 not confirmed).
Lancashire BMD has a Gwen married to Frank Thomas of Knotty Ash, this could be the same dunno?
thanks for your time
Karl.

Hello Karl
I too was born a Sproston and there are more of us than you would think! I have a database which aims to include all Sprostons everywhere, you can view it online at www.sproston.org.uk
I can see that Bernard was born in 1923 and his mother's name was Joanna Hilton, who married William Sproston in 1917 in West Derby district. I'll see what else I can find out.
All the best
Sue (nee Sproston)

Karl
Having looked at my database which has all Sproston/Sproson/Sprowson/Sprawson data from 1901, I would guess that Bernard's father, William, was born in Liverpool in 1895 and was the son of William and Annie, as follows;
William Sproston 46 b. Chester Lancashire West Derby Coachman Livery Stable Annie Sproston 39 b. Manchester Lancashire West Derby Hilda Sproston 12 b. Liverpool Lancashire West Derby Juvenile Francis Sproston 10 b. Liverpool Lancashire West Derby Juvenile William Sproston 6 b. Liverpool Lancashire West Derby Juvenile Ethel Sproston 2 b. Liverpool Lancashire West Derby Juvenile
William comes from Chester originally and I can trace his family back to 1791 (see http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~sprostonfamily/1378.htm). Annie was his second wife and I believe he had two daughters by his first wife, Elizabeth.
The only other Sproston family in the same parish in 1901 is as follows, and the father, Samuel, originates from Dudley:
Samuel Sproston 52 Worcestershire Dudley Lancashire West Derby Commission Agent Mary Sproston 49 Staffs Kingwensford Lancashire West Derby Irene Sproston 21 Worcestershire Dudley Lancashire West Derby Managerers Fancy Goods Elsie Sproston 16 Worcestershire Dudley Lancashire West Derby Juvenile Adela Sproston 11 Worcestershire Dudley Lancashire West Derby Juvenile
But this is all just a guess. We would need to see the marriage certificate of William Sproston and Joanna Hilton to be sure of William's parents.
Sue
