Whirehaven public houses@ 1830
« on: Tuesday 20 November 07 21:21 GMT (UK) »

I am looking for any information regarding old public houses in Whitehaven in the 1800's One of my ancestors was a landlord and I would be very interested to explore further. His name was James Jones (born Jamaica) and I beleive he was known locally as Indian King. Is there anybody out there that may be able to point me in the right direction?  I a mworking on the assumption that it woulf have been from around 1830. Thanks Lincsbabe

You beat me to it Geoff Grin  I had just scanned that page of pubs, with the map, and was about to post it, when I noticed the bit at the bottom of your post.

That must have been quite a grand pub, Masons is a large building, probably with paying guests as well.

My dad had a few relations who were publicans in the pubs around the harbour.  Apparently in those days just about every other house was a pub!!

James was maybe the landlord who introduced the toilet Lincsbabe Grin

Hi Rosemary, I think my lot were customers around the harbour Smiley  Mr Gran's brother used to keep the Columba Club on Queen St (to 1964ish).  My Gran and her 2nd husband had the Beehive at Hensingham for a few years - they left it in 1953 and moved to Sandhills Lane.

I know the Columba club - up for sale at the moment I think.  Which was the Beehive at Hensingham?  I don't know if I know that one.  I can't think where Sandhills Lane is either Grin

My brain is fuddled at the moment, I've had a busy day at work, and could do with 40 winks to revive me.

James Jones also would auction off various items that came in on the ships!

He was a widow and then married Eleanor Blenkinsop daughter of Elizabeth Hinton, and George Blenkinsop.

I have more information on this family if you would like to send me a personal message!!
